There is no permanent cure for dandruff, but there are many safe and effective methods for treating it. Frequent washing with a medicinal shampoo works most of the time, but for best results, the shampoo should be left in for five to ten minutes to allow the active ingredients to kill bacteria and to loosen and retard the formation of scales. The longer the hair, the more difficult it is to treat the dandruff, so getting a haircut is recommended. Also, one should refrain from using hair sprays and gels until the dandruff is under control, since these products tend to worsen dandruff.
Medicinal shampoos use special active ingredients to treat dandruff; salicylic acid, selenium sulfide, pyrithione zinc and coal tar are some of the many such substances that are found in well-known medicinal shampoos. It is recommended to use the shampoo every day until the dandruff is under control, and then two to three times a week until it disappears. If the condition persists, go to a dermatologist who may prescribe a steroid lotion.
Recent research at the University of Utrecht has shown that Llama antibodies kill the fungus that causes and aggravates dandruff. Sulfur products are also effective in many cases, as well as Bay, or Pimenta racemosa. In addition, there are many tried and true home remedies for dandruff, but note that these do not always work for everyone, so it is best to try a few until you find one that works for you. One method is to take a small sized brush, like a small scrub brush which has harder bristles than a toothbrush. After shampooing the hair, take the brush and go over the scalp; brush firmly and rinse out the shampoo. Another idea is to take 8 tablespoons if peanut oil and mix it with lemon juice to make homemade anti-dandruff shampoo. A good hair rinse can be made with ? cup of vinegar and 1 quart of water, or try pouring an infusion of thyme and chapparal over your hair. Others have found that eating flaxseeds, oily fish, kelp, selenium, vitamin B complex, vitamin E, vitamin C and zinc while avoiding oil, dairy, nuts and sugar reduces dandruff symptoms. Many people have found that aloe ferox, Listerine, buttermilk, aspirin and mineral oil also work quite well.
Whether you opt for a home remedy or a medicinal shampoo to treat your dandruff, don¡¯t be discouraged if it takes some time to see an improvement or if the dandruff comes back. Feel free to experiment to find the dandruff treatment program that is right fo
