When planning a spring wedding, the modern bride has a wide array of choices regarding color schemes and flower arrangements.  In the past, color schemes were based on seasonal flower availability; however, the ability to grow many flowers year-round has vastly expanded the bride¡¯s options, which allows greater flexibility in choosing a color scheme and the coordinating flowers.  In this article we will explore both traditional and modern wedding color themes, with suggestions for coordinating flowers for the ceremony and reception.

The traditional spring wedding

Traditionally, the spring wedding focuses on soft pastels, such as pink, light yellow and lavender.  This is usually seen in features such as pastel bridesmaids dresses, bridesmaids bouquets with roses that contain a hint of pink or small lavender flowers, and the use of seasonal flowers, such as the very traditional Lily of the Valley (which peaks in the spring, and is a relatively expensive flower to carry).  When choosing white flowers to accompany the ceremony, brides often choose fragrant blooms, such as gardenias and roses, often with a bit of baby¡¯s breath (which is available year round).  A slight twist on traditional pew decorations is to make pastel paper cones with a ribbon loop for hanging over the end of the pew.  Add a waterproof lining to the cone, and add fresh white or pastel flowers in a coordinating color to the cone.  A good color combination for this is lavender cones with white flowers (baby¡¯s breath is a beautiful option).  For the reception, the spring theme is continued in the use of pastel tablecloths (typically used as an overlay on top of white tablecloths, to use the pastel as an accent rather than as a heavy-handed theme).  Alternatively, decorate white tablecloths using floating candles in the same pastel color as the bridesmaids¡¯ dresses, or as the non-white accent color in the bride¡¯s bouquet, if there is one.  Because the colors in the spring palette (pink, lavender, and yellow) mix well together, do not be afraid to use all three.

The modern spring wedding

Unlike the soft, soothing colors of the traditional spring wedding scheme, a more modern approach is to capture the energy of spring using bright, vibrant colors such as bright pink, yellow and purple.  The easiest way to incorporate these colors without the colors being overwhelming is to use fresh spring tulips, which are available in a wide array of colors.  The color scheme can run the gamut from using bright flowers as accents to the traditional white flowers, or can be used as a bright focal point of the ceremony and reception when used in greater numbers.  Another option is to use colored calla lilies, which can be found in bright colors, including vibrant pink and both bright and softer shades of yellow.  For a modern twist on the bridesmaids¡¯ dresses, choose a number of bright colors that coordinate with each other, then allow each bridesmaid to choose one of the colors for her dress so there is a rainbow of colors rather than a single color for the dresses.  For the reception, choose a different color for each table, and add a vibrant bouquet at the center that coordinates with the different shades of the bridesmaids¡¯ dresses.  If you are hesitant about incorporating a great deal of color into the wedding scheme, choose two complementary shades of the same color (such as bright and pastel yellow) and build you color theme from there.  Whether you choose the traditional or modern option, be sure to pick a color scheme that fits the mood and formality of your wedding, and don¡¯t forget: it¡¯s your wedding, so have some fun with it!
