When a woman decides to go the natural way and breastfeed her baby, chances are she is bombarded with all types of strange fiction. ¡°Breastfeeding will make you less desirable to your mate.¡± ¡°If you decide to breastfeed, you can forget your chances of going back to work.¡± ¡°Breastfeeding causes you to gain weight.¡± ¡°It hurts to breastfeed.¡± These are just some of the ideas that women have in their head when it comes to breastfeeding. I will take five of the biggest breastfeeding myths and put them to bed.
Myth # 1: Breastfeeding Causes You To Gain Weight
On the contrary, breastfeeding causes you to burn hundreds of calories which, in turn, causes you to lose your pregnancy weight even faster. It is estimated that a woman can burn as much as 500 calories a day just by breastfeeding. That¡¯s the equivalent of an average-sized woman running five miles in one day. Granted, a mother will probably want to eat additional food so as not to burn off too many calories since it is healthier to gradually lose pregnancy weight. It is recommended that a mother who is allowing her child to breastfeed only lose half a pound to a pound a week. This benefit alone should have women rushing to breastfeed their newborns!
Myth #2: Breastfeeding Deprives You of Going Out And Having Fun
People love to think that a breastfeeding mother is a homebound mother. That is absolutely not true. It is completely possible for a mother who is breastfeeding to go on public outings for shopping, taking walks around the neighborhood or running errands. While it was strictly taboo for a woman to breastfeed in public a decade or two ago, most people have started growing used to seeing nursing mothers, as studies show that breastfeeding is more beneficial to newborns than formula. Also, if a new mother feels uncomfortable with breastfeeding in public or if she plans on going back to work, she can always use a breast pump to get milk ahead of time to freeze for baby later on.
Myth #3: Breastfeeding Will Kill Your Libido
Anybody who has delivered a child will attest to the fact that it is natural for any woman who has just given birth to have a diminished sex drive for a few weeks to a few months afterwards, irregardless of breastfeeding. This is due largely to the sleepless nights and new time schedules that a baby imposes on new parents. People, however, like to put the blame on breastfeeding because in our society, breasts are seen as a source of sensuality. There is fear that when a wife begins to nurse, she will begin to view her breasts as a source of nutrition rather than a sexual organ. As long as a woman¡¯s husband is supportive of her decision to nurse and helps with baby duties as much as he possibly can, the sex drive will eventually return to normal.
Myth #4: Formula Is A Perfect Replacement For Breast Milk
This is absolutely not true. Although technology has improved vastly over the years in the production of formula, nothing replaces the nutrients, hormones, antibodies and vitamins that are found naturally in breast milk. Most studies you read will point to breast milk as the best nutrition a newborn can receive. Scientific studies have proven that babies who have been breast fed have a decreased risk of developing allergies, infections, diarrhea and lung disorders when compared to babies who drink formula.
Myth #5: Women With Small Breasts Can Say Bye-Bye To Breastfeeding
For those of us who are blessed/cursed with small breasts, the size of a woman¡¯s breasts has nothing to do with the production of milk. As long as the mother is making healthy eating choices, is getting enough rest and is drinking enough liquids, she will produce the necessary amount of milk for her baby. |
