Shopping for plus size clothing isn¡¯t the easiest thing in the world. Firstly, many stores don¡¯t even carry larger sizes and secondly, it¡¯s so frustrating to try on outfit after outfit, only to be disappointed time and again about the fit. Plus size women already know that just because a shirt says ¡°plus size¡± doesn¡¯t mean that it is. ¡°One size fits all¡± is another tag that most large women don¡¯t trust. Women are all shapes and sizes, so it¡¯s impossible for a manufacturer to sell a shirt or a pair of pants that will look great on everyone. 

When shopping for large clothes, know your measurements. This is essential for getting a really great fit. A shirt can be a size 2X, but made extremely short. You look at the 2X tag and think, ¡°that¡¯s my size¡±, until you get it home and find it to be way too small in the length. Write down your measurements before you shop, including bust, shoulder-to-shoulder across the back, from the dip in your throat to the hem, around the upper arm, the length from the shoulder to the wrist, waist, hips, around the thigh, from the side waist to the hem, and from the waist to the floor. Depending upon what you¡¯re shopping for, you might also want to measure from the back of the neck to the hem of a below-the-knee skirt, a mini skirt, or a tea-length. 

Of course, you can always measure clothing on a rack at a local retailer while everyone stares, take it to the dressing room and fumble around in there, and you can try the garments on for some more frustration. And simply glancing at the tag might tell you the basics, like bust, waist or hip size, but rarely arm size or length.

Shopping online makes it a little easier, if you can get all the information you need. Many online retail stores state the measurements of the garment in bust, waist, hip, length and sometimes, arm length. But, if you want to know the measurement around the upper arm of the garment, that will be nearly impossible to find out. Calling customer service is not much help, since the only info they have is basically what¡¯s already at the website. Most reputable companies do allow you to return the merchandise, at their expense, if it doesn¡¯t fit. 

Online auctions are great for finding large clothing, but a lot of caution is necessary before making a purchase. The convenience is that many auctions have an option where the potential buyer can ask the seller a question about the auction. If the auction has more than 24 hours, chances are you¡¯ll get a response back, answering your question, in time to get in on the final bidding. As a precaution, check the seller¡¯s feedback before purchasing, make sure the garment states ¡°new¡± or otherwise, and make a list of other requirements or things you need to know before purchasing. By making a list, you can remember what all to ask the seller about the size, shape and condition of the garment. Be sure and check the shipping price on the garment before making a final bid. What seems like a great deal, may not be after shipping is added.
