The convenience of adding tips to your very own nails has been a fashion trend for years.  Acrylic nails can be very sturdy and long lasting versus natural nails.  This type of manicure usually will last 5 to 10 days depending upon how well bonded the acrylic is before you will need a fill in.

Here are some tips for applying acrylic nails at home.

Like all things, applying acrylic nails at home takes much practice.  Always begin with a clean nail surface.  Wiping acetone over your own nails will clear away any oils or any old nail polish from the surface.  Purchase a set of nail tips, acrylic liquid, acrylic powder, a brush for application, bonding glue, acetone, a manicure stick, and two nail boards: one with a coarse side to even out and shape the surface of the acrylic nail, and then one with a smoother side for buffing. It may also be a good idea to purchase a small bottle of nail primer to be used as a disinfectant when applying acrylic nails.  There are now many drug stores that carry a line of acrylic nail tips kits for your convenience.)  The market has many nail tips to choose from.  There are sport lengths and then there are the more longer lengths such as the eagle claw.  Pick the nail tip that you know you will be able to work with on a daily basis.  For a more special occasion it is okay to choose a much longer length.  You can always trim the nail tip down to size before you apply the acrylic anyway.  

Before you begin, make sure to line up your work surface with several paper towels.  You will need 2 small glasses or saucers: one to put the acrylic liquid in, and another to put acetone in.  Take out each nail tip and measure which ones match closely to your own natural nail tip.  The tips should not pass over too much of your own.  Set the tips down in front of you so that once you are gluing them to your own nail, you can easily correspond them to your own nails.  Follow through with each finger and each nail.  Nail tips usually have numbers on the bottom of the tip so that you will be able to use the same tip for the same finger on the opposite hand.

Once you have sized up all of your nail tips, take a small amount of bonding glue and place a small dot on the tip of your own nail.  Take the corresponding nail tip and glue it against your own nail.  Hold in place for a few seconds so that the tip will stick.  Follow with each of your other fingers and other nails.  Once you have glued all the nail tips on, t take a nail clipper, and trim down the nails to a desired length.  File the edges and corners of the artificial nail tip to remove any sharp edges.    

Before you apply the acrylic, place the nail brush into the glass with the acetone to soften the bristles.  Open up the jar of acrylic powder and pour some acrylic liquid into the other glass jar or saucer.  Take the brush and wipe off any excess acetone against the paper towel laid out in front of you and dip the brush into the acrylic liquid and wipe off any excess across the rim.  Next, dip the tip of the brush immediately into the acrylic powder and you will notice that it will form a small ball.  Take it and place it close to the nail cuticle and using the brush pushing the acrylic as close to the nail cuticle as possible.  If you notice that the acrylic is not easy to spread, then dip the brush into the acrylic liquid and place the liquid on the acrylic already on the nail to make the mixture more supple.  Using the brush, spread the acrylic over the entire nail all the way to the tip as if you are applying nail polish.  For a more smoother application, try to apply acrylic liquid as much as possible to the nail.  If you see the acrylic becoming lumpy and uneven, apply more liquid.  If the mixture becomes too watery, then apply more acrylic powder and so forth  Always wipe off any excess immediately.  Use the manicure stick to remove any acrylic immediately from the cuticle or the sides of the skin because once it hardens, it will be difficult to remove.  Keep wiping off excess acrylic on the paper towel in front of you before applying new acrylic to the nail.  If you notice that the acrylic is sticking to the brush, dip it into the acetone filled glass or saucer to remove it.  Apply a second coat of acrylic if necessary.  Try to avoid applying too many coats of acrylic as it will make the nail appear less natural.

Repeat with all the remaining fingers on both hands.  

Once you have applied acrylic to all nails, and the acrylic is dry and hardened, then take the coarse nail board, and file the surface of each nail to smooth it out evenly and also to shape the nail on the sides.  The nail surface should have little to no ridges in them. Wash your hands off of the acrylic dust and dry thoroughly.  Next, take the smoother nail board and buff the surface of each nail.  

Once you are done buffing, you are ready to apply nail color.  Before applying nail color, make sure that the surface of each nail is clean and free of all acrylic dust residue.  You can take non-acetone nail polish remover and pass over a cotton ball over each nail to make sure the surface is clean.

Apply nail color as usual.  Always use a base and top coat. Always use non-acetone nail polish remover when remover nail color because acetone melts acrylic nails.  Nail color takes longer to dry on acrylic nails versus natural nails, so allow ample time for nail color to dry in between coats.  When you are ready to remove all of your acrylic nails entirely, soak your hands in a glass bowl filled with acetone for about 20-30 minutes.  You will notice the acrylic melting and softening and ever so often take a coarse nail board to file away the acrylic. 

Your acrylic manicure should last anywhere from 5 to 10 days before you need a fill in.  Remember to only have acrylic nails on for about four weeks before you have to remove them altogether, and either manicure your own nails, or place on a new set.  This minimizes the growth of fungus in the nails and gives your natural nails time to breathe.  If a nail lifts, then it is time to remove it or place a new nail tip.  Never glue a nail that lifts because it gives the opportunity for fungus to growth in your nails.

With these tips in mind, you can go a long way with a salon acrylic manicure at home all the time.
