Good service deserves to be rewarded. Whether it¡¯s the person who served your dinner or the person who carried your bags, they deserve to be recognized for their efforts. Most of us know that a Server or Hairdresser should receive a gratuity, but it tends to get confusing after that. Who requires a tip and what is the proper amount? This guide to tipping etiquette should answer many of your questions.

Tipping isn¡¯t required, but just because it¡¯s optional doesn¡¯t mean you shouldn¡¯t do it. Not only is it letting someone know how much you appreciated a service well done, but many workers depend on this money to support themselves and work hard to earn a gratuity.

 If you¡¯re dining at a sit-down restaurant and you¡¯re waited on by a server for all of your meal, a tip of fifteen to twenty percent is called for. If you feel the service was truly exemplary, you can, of course, tip more. Unless your service was below standard, it¡¯s not good etiquette to tip less than fifteen percent.  If you¡¯re dining at a restaurant that offers only partial service, for instance a buffet, the gratuity should be less, about five to ten percent depending on the quality, and amount, of service received. 

For take-out orders you¡¯ll want to tip the delivery person fifteen percent of the order. For a catered affair where the food must be presented as well as delivered, tipping upwards of twenty percent is the norm. Deliveries that have nothing to do with food require a tip as well. For a food delivery, one to five dollars is acceptable depending on the number and size of items ordered. For very large deliveries, you might want to be more generous. Something else to consider is the location of the restaurant. If it¡¯s not close by, you should tip a little extra.

For floral deliveries, the size of the tip depends on the size and type of arrangement. For instance, a basic vase of flowers requires only a gratuity of one to three dollars. If it¡¯s a much larger delivery of several arrangements and big plants, up to ten dollars is appropriate.

For furniture, three to five dollars per piece of furniture is acceptable; however, you should take into consideration the type of furniture and how much lifting and maneuvering was required to get it to its final destination. For instance, if a large, heavy couch had to be carried up six flights of stairs, a tip of ten to twenty dollars might be in order. You should also tip extra if assembly is required by the delivery person.

Your hair stylist should receive a tip of fifteen to twenty percent of the final bill if you received the basic cut and style. Additional services require additional gratuities. The person who washes your hair should receive a dollar or two; a colorist should also receive ten to fifteen percent. If you had a manicure, your nail technician should receive one to three dollars.

Different hotel workers also require different gratuities. For instance, the housekeeper should receive anywhere from one to ten dollars per night. If you¡¯re in a large room in an expensive hotel, a high-end tip is expected. You should also give generously if you¡¯re not very neat, or if you constantly have to contact housekeeping. The bellhop should receive one to three dollars per piece when carrying bags to your room, and it¡¯s proper to tip the room service delivery person ten to fifteen percent.

Just because a casino may win all your money doesn¡¯t mean tips aren¡¯t required there either. The server who brings drinks to your gaming table or slot machine should receive one to two dollars. Card and roulette dealers should receive five dollars when you leave the table and craps dealers should receive one dollar. If a technician comes to repair a slot machine or offer assistance, that person should receive one or two dollars. 

Below are some tipping guidelines for other services:

If you receive valet parking, one or two dollars is fine. If you receive assistance with luggage, you might want to be more generous. 

Taxi Drivers require a ten to fifteen percent tip and limousine drivers should receive about twenty percent.

If you employ the services of a skycap when you¡¯re at the airport, a tip of one to three dollars per bag is expected.

A massage therapist should receive ten to twenty percent.

Movers should receive ten to twenty dollars each.

Tow truck operators typically receive three to five dollars depending on the services offered and how much time is spent working on your vehicle.

Tips or donations for wedding clergy person usually amount to fifty to seventy five dollars. If your house of worship brings in an organist, that person should receive fifty dollars as well.

Ushers and sporting events and concerts should receive one dollar unless they¡¯re working with a very large party, in which case, you should use your best judgment and be more generous.

Hopefully these guidelines will clear up any confusion you may have when it comes to tipping those who worked so hard to assist you. Just use your best judgment. If you feel you need to me a little more generous because someone went on and beyond the call of duty, then by all means please do so. If you received shoddy service and you don¡¯t feel it should be rewarded, that¡¯s also your prerogative. Don¡¯t avoid a tip because you don¡¯t know the proper etiquette, however, good behavior should certainly be rewarded.
