GATHER OLD PICTURES

Guests at a 50th anniversary party will want to see how the couple has changed and what they have experienced together throughout their fifty years of marriage.  Collect pictures from the couple being celebrated from their wedding, their vacations, different houses they have lived in, family pictures, etc.  If they have some pictures from when they were dating, those would be great too.  You should set up a table to display a chronology of their relationship through photographs.  Don¡¯t keep anything other than the pictures on the table though.  The last thing you would want to happen is for some spilled salsa to ruin their cherished photographs.  If you are scared that there will be a mess, make color photocopies.  If you do this, then you can even cut the pictures up and make them into a fancy collage that the couple can take home with them.  Everyone will love seeing the chronology of the couple, and the couple themselves will be touched by the display.

FOCUS ON THE COUPLE

This party is intended to celebrate the married couple whose fiftieth anniversary it is.  Therefore, the party should be suited to their tastes.  If they don¡¯t like contemporary music (and how many couples celebrating their fiftieth wedding anniversary do?), then play whatever they like.  You should be more worried about pleasing the couple than pleasing anyone else, and you will find that if the couple is happy, their happiness will rub off on everyone there.  

COMPILE A GUEST LIST

If your party is a surprise, then you are going to have to be sneaky in compiling a list of all the people that they would have wanted to be a part of their anniversary celebration.  Would they want a small gathering with close family and friends, or would they want a bigger gala complete with family, friends, acquaintances, neighbors, and co-workers?  You shouldn¡¯t try to remember everyone all by yourself.  Ask their children (or your siblings, if the party is for your parents) or close friends of theirs for help in compiling the list.  

CREATE AN ANNIVERSARY BOOK

A fabulous way to commemorate this couple on their golden anniversary is by asking each guest to create a page in a memory book that you will put together for the couple.  Contact your guests by phone so that you can explain to them what you are looking for in memory book page.  They could write a memorable story that they shared with the couple, surround it with some artwork or dried flowers.  They could affix a photograph from a memorable time they shared, and then write about that.  Send each guest a page that you will put into a scrap book, and ask them to prepare their page and get it back to you at least a week before the party, so that you have the time to organize all the pages into the memory book, along with your own page or pages.  Decorate the cover with a wedding photograph, and leave room at the end of the book for them to add memories in the years to come.  This gift will be an absolute treasure to the couple ¨C get ready for some laughter and some tears.

MAKE AND SEND INVITATIONS

Make some heart-shaped invitations out of construction paper.  Decorate the invitations like old-fashioned Valentine¡¯s cards.  Use some lace trim or doilies.  Include a romantic quote or some song lyrics about love.  You can hand-write the wording on the invitations, or you can print them out on the computer printer, and then trim them to size and glue them onto the front of your invitations.  Include information about the date and time, the address, the names of the couple you are celebrating, and an RSVP date along with your phone number.  You should ask for responses no later than a week in advance, so that you can provide the correct quantities of food and drink.

BUY FOOD OR HAVE IT CATERED

To cater or not to cater: that is the question.  In a nutshell, if you can afford a caterer, get a caterer.  That way, you will have the ability to enjoy the party, and spend time with the happy couple.  If you can¡¯t afford it, though, then try to prepare foods that you can make in advance.  Casserole dishes are a great option because they just need to be heated up.  However, you will want to make sure to include some of the couple¡¯s favorite dishes as well.  Stock up on sodas, wines, and beers too, so that you don¡¯t have to play bartender all night long.
