When a loved one dies, we don't always have the luxury of time to plan an eloquent service that does the person justice. Instead, we may follow the funeral home traditions or arrange a rather generic service that follows funeral conventions. Sometimes, that is preferable to languishing over the loss of someone we care about.

But there may be times when someone is about to pass away that we want to honor that person with a special tribute. Perhaps you hope to convey a little of the loved one's spirit at the funeral service. Everyone is different, in life and in death, so each funeral should be somewhat unique.

If you are giving thought to a future family member's passing, you may want to pre-plan or even pre-pay a funeral. Taking a calm, sensible approach to managing this event allows you time to make prudent choices in keeping with the loved one's wishes. 

One of these decisions is the general tone or theme of the funeral. Here are some possibilities that have been used by others:

1. A period party. If the family member was really involved in a certain time period and perhaps even collected memorabilia or photos from that era, you may want to throw a final party that captures the essence of that special time. For example, if your loved one relished the 1950's, you could ask everyone to dress in '50's styles, play '50's music, and bring in some of the departed person's collection for display. One family even buried their loved one in the driver's seat of 1950's Cadillac. Clearly, you can adjust this approach to make it suit your desired tone and mood.

2. A family reunion. Set up a collage of family photos, letters, and diaries (if applicable) to recreate a sense of family unity. The person providing a eulogy may be able to stress the hope of family members seeing one another again in the next life, especially if all held the same spiritual beliefs. Remaining relatives can share short anecdotes about the departed, along with stories of earlier family members who have predeceased this one. 

3. Spiritual support. A Bible, devotionals, or religious ornaments and plaques can set the tone of spiritual nurturing and comfort. Especially if the viewing and service take place in a church or worship center, the guests can take peace in their surroundings and all the indicators that point to eternal hope in the presence of God. The family's pastor can be on hand to offer prayers and present a service that outlines the plan of salvation to guests who may be in need of spiritual counsel.

4. Going away party. Balloons, signs, and posters may give the impression of a bon voyage party. Guests may dress in white or light-colored clothing, and meaningful treats like angel food cake may be served. The upbeat tone of this theme is a variation on the ancient Egyptian idea of a deceased person taking a trip. The modern adaptation corresponds to religious thought that the soul leaves the body to reunite with its Maker. 

Whatever your family's view of death, or thoughts of the destination of the departed, select a theme that fits the deceased's personality and will provide a meaningful farewell from the guests who will gather to pay tribute.
