If you suffer from pain in your feet, legs, knees, hips, ankles, or back, it may be due to foot problems and there may be a simple solution. You may need orthotics, or shoe "inserts" to heal problems with your feet that are causing other ailments. If orthotics can prevent you from having to take medication or from constant visits to the chiropractor, they are definitely worth a try. Speak to your healthcare provider to see if orthotics are right for you.
How orthotics work
Many times weight is distributed unequally, and the feet are not properly aligned with the rest of the body. This creates a situation where the feet are unable to touch the ground evenly when a person walks. Orthotics can help correct these problems in many cases.
Weight may be an issue
Carrying extra weight can put added strain on your feet, which can eventually damage the bones if not treated properly. Inserts with extra padding to cushion the feet may be all that is required to make you more comfortable. Cushioned inserts can also help absorb shock, which is increased by weight gain.
Orthotics can be purchased over the counter
If you do not have a serious condition, you may be able to use over the counter inserts available in most drug stores. From heel cups to gel inserts to simple cushion inserts, there is a great variety from which to choose. Even if you do not have a medical condition, orthotics may help make you more comfortable, especially if you stand on your feet for many hours each day.
Orthotics can be custom made
Custom orthotics are available by prescription, on the advice of a podiatrist. If your doctor feels that the way you step requires greater correction than that which is provided by over the counter inserts, he or she may suggest custom-made orthotics. A cast will be made for each foot and inserts will be designed especially for you.
Cost of orthotics
Over the counter inserts are reasonably priced. They cost about as much as a package of socks or a pair of slippers. Custom made orthotics can be fairly expensive, but may be covered by insurance. Speak to your insurance agent to find out. You may be required to pay a portion of the cost. In either event, the expense is well worth it if the orthotics help relieve your aches and pains, and help you avoid surgery or the side effects caused by medication.
The body is amazing and it is intriguing to see how one part can affect the others. The feet are the "foundation" of the body and they must be well cared for in order to optimize the performance of the rest of the body. If you suffer from foot pain or other conditions affecting the feet, do not suffer in silence or simply try to treat the problem yourself. Consult with a podiatrist and see if the solution is orthotics. You have nothing to lose, except for constant pain.
