Cheating isn¡¯t nice¡ªand unfortunately, it isn¡¯t terribly uncommon. It is also the last thing a wife wants to believe. The ¡®Queen of Denial¡¯ title is apt for many wives who ought to know better. And maybe they do. 

Telltale signs your husband is cheating at work:

? He was gushing about his new co-worker at first, now suddenly he¡¯s mum about her.

? His work habits have changed dramatically: going in early, working later, or working weekends, while his paycheck and level of responsibility haven¡¯t changed. 

? He¡¯s dressing much nicer for work than he does for you; and taking more care with personal hygiene (hint: if he just started flossing, it¡¯s either because he¡¯s seeing a new dentist or seeing a new woman).

? He¡¯s starting to hang out with ¡®the guys¡¯ at work¡ªa lot. And he¡¯s vague about where they¡¯re going.

Telltale signs your husband is cheating, period:

? He¡¯s developed a new vocabulary about women¡¯s clothing, hairstyles, or health issues¡ªand he didn¡¯t pick it up from you or his mother.

? He¡¯s buying new clothes for himself, and he¡¯s unusally concerned about how they fit and that they look nice. 

? He¡¯s suddenly aware of new restaurants, nightspots, and fun weekend activities nearby--things he never seemed to notice before.

? He¡¯s developed a sudden, deep interest in a new hobby and it¡¯s not something he's doing with any of his (male) friends.

? He¡¯s developed a new appreciation for, and understanding of, a suburb that the two of you don¡¯t frequent¡ªand when you ask him about it, he can¡¯t quite put his finger on where his newfound knowledge originated. 

? He¡¯s got to go away for the weekend¡­and is vague about where and with whom.

Look, nobody really wants to know if these signs are pointing to an affair. But, knowing the truth is the first step toward dealing with the truth. (And many experts will point out, if you ¡°think¡± your husband might be cheating, it¡¯s because you probably already know it¡¯s happening.)

Need proof? Look here:

Bank account: are there unusual withdrawls, especially at ATM machines on days he was (supposed to be) working?

Credit card statements: is he going out to lunch at ¡®nice¡¯ restaurants several times a week (which is a departure from his usual routine)?

Cell phone bill: most itemize numbers called. If he¡¯s cheating, you¡¯ll find one number repeated over and over¡­

Home phone bill: did he recently subscribe to call waiting, without your requesting it? 

Also search his briefcase, for cards and/or e-mails from her; the glove compartment and/or trunk of his car for blankets, pillows, earrings or other jewelry, receipts, and anything else that might be left over from a tryst. 

Also, if you don't already, check pants pockets and suit jacket pockets before laundering them. Another obvious place to look--his key chain. Any new keys should be easily explainable--or not. 

And whether you find proof or not, remember¡ªthe key to surviving an affair is staying sane yourself. Talking to a professional counselor, alone, or together with your husband, is an excellent step to take¡ªno matter what you find out, you¡¯ll have a great start on dealing with it.
