Location: Home > lifestyle > Creating subtle makeup effects: the right tools and applicators for a daytime look
When it comes to a daytime look, think "natural" and "subtle." Using the right tools and applicators can help you achieve this look by enhancing your features with a few simple techniques. For a small investment, you can create makeup effects with the confidence of a pro!
The best daytime look is one that mirrors who you are. First, consider your natural coloring, hair color, and age before you select and apply makeup. Second, consider what you do during the day. If you have a career outside the home, you can have a great daytime look¡ªbut perhaps with a little more flair¡ªusing an eye pencil, eye shadow, mascara, lipstick and blush. If you¡¯re at home, ease and simplicity will probably work great for you. You might want to wear only mascara, tinted lip gloss or lipstick, and some blush.
Before you apply any makeup, be sure your face is cleansed, exfoliated and moisturized, using a moisturizer with a minimum SPF 15. Properly cleansed skin allows the foundation to go on smoother.
The Lighting
Apply your makeup in a room that has good, natural-looking lighting. This will aid you in applying your makeup and using your tools with accuracy.
The Tools
Tweezers
Brow brush
Eyelash curler
Eyebrow gel
The Makeup and Applicators
Foundation/makeup sponge
Translucent face powder
Natural bristle powder brush
Eye pencil
Eye shadow with sponge-tipped applicators
Mascara (dark brown or black)
Lip pencil
Lipstick/Lip Gloss/Lipstick brush
Blush, with natural bristle brush
Choose colors and shades that are subtle such as pastels and neutrals; taupe, sand etc. Think natural. Use richer tones for darker skin and lighter tones for lighter skin. These will help you create great makeup effects for a daytime look when you use the tools and applicators listed above.
Start with the Eyebrows
Before applying makeup to create your subtle, daytime look, notice the natural shape of your eyebrows. With a pair of tweezers, gently remove any stray hairs that fall outside of your natural arch. Tweeze lightly, one hair at a time. Now use the eyebrow brush and gently brush up and out, following the natural arch of the brow. Apply a brow gel to hold hairs in place.
Steps to Creating a Subtle, Daytime Look
1. Foundation¡ªFoundation is used for smoothing out textures and uneven skin tones. Choose a sheer foundation that most matches the skin on your face. Gently moisten the makeup sponge, then squeeze out any water. Apply some foundation to the sponge then begin applying to face, cheeks, forehead, nose and chin. The look should be light and natural, not heavy or thick.
2. Face powder¡ªUse face powder to help "set" the foundation and give your face a matte finish. Take the powder brush, gently dip it into the face powder and shake off any excess. Apply powder to face in a gentle dusting fashion, avoiding the eye area.
3. Eye shadow¡ªFor a subtle daytime look, think soft, muted colors that work well with your skin, eye and hair color. You can use eye shadow just above the eyelashes for a simple look. Try colors like mauve, olive, soft browns. Take the applicator brush and apply the eye shadow on the lid. Then use a contouring color such as light brown or light gray, and with the sponge-tipped applicator, apply the eye shadow in the middle of the lid. You can also use a light-colored highlighter just under the eyebrow.
4. Eye pencil¡ªEye pencils enhance the shape of the eyes. Take your eye pencil and gently outline your eyes just above the eyelashes, working down to the outer corner of the eyes. Remember, this is a daytime look and should not be too dark, heavy or thick.
5. Lashes¡ªUse the eyelash curler by placing it over your upper lashes and gently closing.
6. Mascara¡ªTake your mascara and gently brush upward on your upper eyelashes and downward on your lower lashes, applying a thin coat of mascara to give a thicker, darker and longer look. Two coats should do it.
7. Lip Liner/Lipstick/Lip Gloss¡ªOutline your lips with the lip pencil, carefully following the outline of your lips. Now take your lipstick brush and apply lipstick, filling in the lip area. Or, for a simple look, just apply lip gloss using the lip brush.
1. Blush¡ªWith your natural bristle brush, apply your blush in gentle strokes, upward and outward across your cheekbones, creating a slightly rosy look. Take care not to apply too much blush.
With the right tools and applicators, you can create subtle makeup effects for a great daytime look. Enhance your natural beauty by selecting the techniques that work best for you and your lifestyle¡ªand then start your day with a boost of confidence as you step into the world! |
