When it comes to shaving, everyone has a personal favorite best way of doing it. Even among the genders, no two people agree on a method or products used.
Today, there are many options on the market to meet the diverse needs of shavers. Although it might be difficult to find a straight razor at your local drug store, the shelves will be filled with many other products. First, you must decide whether to use an electric or blade razor. If choosing an electric razor, a pre-shave oil is recommended before use. If you choose a blade razor, you will have to decide on the number of blades, which can be from one to four, as this differs between manufacturers. Your next step will be choosing between shaving oil and shaving cream.
Shaving creams have been on the market for years, virtually replacing the shaving brush and soap. Ease of use, along with heavy lather has made creams the overall favorite of most shavers, male or female.
Shaving creams are made from ingredients that work to soften your skin and the hair that you want to remove with the razor. Most creams contain silicones of some type that add a moisturizer to the skin being shaved. Compared to oils and other hair removing creams, canned shaving cream is reasonably priced and can be purchased almost anywhere, from convenience stores to upscale department chains.
Many devices have been manufactured that not only maximize the amount of cream in the can, but also to heat up the contents, giving the shaver a feeling of barbershop closeness.
Shaving oils are a recent addition to the lineup of shaving needs. Most are made of all natural ingredients with no silicones added. Many have essential oils added, for not only skin care but also fragrance.
The advantages of shaving oils are many. Most important to some is that you can see exactly where you are shaving. For men who wear a stylized beard or mustache, this is an absolute must in order to shave only the areas that do not affect their style.
Men who shave their heads completely have found that oils allow them a closer shave along with conditioning the scalp, helping to prevent dryness and flaking.
Women also seem to like the closeness of the shave and the conditioning benefits of oil. Especially in the bikini area, oil causes less razor irritation than creams and is safe when inadvertently touching the more sensitive parts of the body.
Shaving oils tend to be more expensive than creams, but in the end, a little goes along way. Many manufacturers recommend using only a few drops of the oil at a time. For simplicity sake, many people use plain baby oil with the same results. Others also scent the baby oil with other essential oils, such as lavender or musk. A few drops of essential oil will permeate an entire bottle of baby oil.
Many dermatologists still recommend using a shaving brush and shaving soap, saying that the brush works the soap into the hair bristles making the shave closer and less irritating.
No matter which product you use, your shave will, in large part, be only as good as the razor you have chosen. Choose the best blade that you can afford and replace as needed. |
