Shaving is not just for men. In modern society, women, too, must endure the razor in order to look and feel their best. While it's true that in many cultures some women do not remove hair from their bodies, industrialized nations tend to foster hair removal as a female beauty treatment.
Women can grow hair in just about any area of the body that men do, though men usually grow more of it, as with facial hair in the form of a beard. One of the troublesome areas of hair growth for many females is under the arms. Consequently, women typically include shaving this delicate area for hair removal on a routine basis. Here are a few guidelines that may be of help:
1. Select a gentle body soap or shaving cream for this purpose. Add warm water to create a soapy lather in both hands. Use the right hand to swathe under the left arm, covering the entire area thoroughly. Do the same using the left hand to saturate below the right arm. Both armpits should be covered in a foamy lather. Allow to sit a moment to soften the hair for easier removal.
2. Use a clean disposable razor or make sure your permanent razor has a clean blade. Rinse either type in warm water to remove dust or debris. Shake loose any remaining drops of water. Raise your left arm straight up and with your right hand holding the razor, use short downward strokes from slightly above the armpit to just below it to remove hair. Lay each stroke side by side, moving from either the outside of the armpit to the inside, or vice versa. Rinse the removed hair off the razor after each stroke or two.
3. After completing that underarm, use a mirror to check for missed or rogue hairs. Reap them with the razor on a second pass, taking care not to scratch, nick, or cut the skin. Rinse the razor thoroughly. Use a warm washcloth to remove residual lather or hair stubs in the armpit area, checking to be sure you haven't missed anything.
4. Now lift the right arm straight up in the air. Holding the razor with your left hand, use the same type of strokes to shave under your right arm. Stand before a mirror if possible to make sure you catch all hair growth with both the lather and the razor. Avoid moles or cysts, or growths of any kind.
5. Rinse the washcloth with fresh warm water and clean under this arm area as well. Complete your shower, if that is your plan, or finish washing up. Clean the razor or discard it. Replace the lid on your lather or put away the soap, wiping drips or scum from the sides of the container so it won't be slippery next time.
Avoid using deodorant or body lotions for several hours after shaving to allow your pores to close and any minor abrasions to heal. Discontinue using any soap or shaving product, as well as any deodorant or cream, if your underarm area breaks out, becomes red or irritated, or gets itchy. |
