Is your to do list getting longer and longer? Are you sitting and staring at the television set because you just can't make yourself start a big project? You can work through your lack of motivation and start accomplishing the things you need to do.
First, take a look at why you aren't feeling motivated. Are you tired and feeling overwhelmed because you are only sleeping a few hours a night? Is the task you have to complete just too big for you to even think about finishing it? Are you feeling ill? Write down your reasons for your lack of motivation.
Next, think about how you can solve your problem. Do you need more sleep? Write a list of the things you are doing instead of sleeping. Cut out the least important thing and take a power nap.
If a big project is causing your lack of motivation, there is a simple solution to your lack of motivation. You are so overwhelmed by the huge pile of work ahead of you that you just can't start. Stop looking at the whole project. Instead, you will need to break it down into manageable pieces.
For example, what if your only problem is that you have a twenty page report due next week and it is such a big project that you can't even start? First, drop everything, think up a title for your report and make up your title page. Seriously. Stop reading this article and open up your word processing software and get that title page done right now. Done? Terrific. Now, you have started the project and will feel less overwhelmed. Next, look at the number of pages you will need and figure out how many pages you will have to write each day to get the report finished. Now, you only have to write a few pages today. Once you are finished today's writing, you can always keep writing if you want to, but you do not have to. You can put it away and go on to something else. If you feel like you can handle those few pages you have assigned yourself, you will be motivated to get them done.
If you need help doing a big house repair, think about calling some friends and scheduling a work party so that you aren¡¯t facing the task alone. Today, people rarely turn to their friends and neighbors for help with large repairs and building projects, but throughout history people often worked with each other to get jobs done. Working with other people helps you get motivated for several reasons. First, you don¡¯t want to be the only person not working, so you will probably work right through your lack of motivation. Next, knowing that you are not alone when you face a large task decreases the overwhelming size of the project. Finally, since you only have help for a limited amount of time, you have to get the project done within a tight timeframe.
If you have identified your problem, thought about how to solve it, and still cannot motivate yourself, you may want to consider consulting your physician. Illness makes it hard for people to get motivated. A mild case of depression can also cause a lack of motivation, so be sure to mention any traumatic events that you have gone through recently when you speak to your physician.
