You tell your secretary that you¡¯ll need arrangements made for your corporate trip to Hong Kong next week and by the end of the day, the itinerary is sitting on your desk with a printout of some key Chinese phrases to help you get around on your trip. Your secretary keeps track of all of those important clients and always debriefs you on who is on the line when forwarding calls to you. Maybe your secretary always reminds you that you need to pick something up on your way home for your anniversary or spouse¡¯s birthday. In April, tell your secretary you appreciate all he/she does on Secretary¡¯s Day (also known as Exceptional Assistants Day, Administrative Professionals Day or Administrative Assistants Day). 

Walk into any grocery store and you¡¯ll see helium balloons and bouquets of flowers or potted plants dressed up with bows and phrases that say, ¡°Happy Secretary¡¯s Day!¡± Sure, you can grab one of these gifts along with your normal groceries, but why not go that extra mile and get your secretary something that will really show how much you appreciate them? Wouldn¡¯t they do the same for you?

If your secretary plans all of your business lunches or travel arrangements, chances are there is a special manila envelope or folder that he/she passes to you with all of that information. Why not get your secretary a gift certificate to a favorite restaurant and put it in that envelope/folder with a small ribbon tied around it and leave it on their desk? If your secretary loves athletics, one paid round of golf or tickets to a local sporting event may be in order. Maybe your secretary works overtime or frequently works through lunch to make sure their assigned work is always completed on time. Buy a nice basket and load it up with relaxation gifts like aromatherapy candles, relaxation oils and fragrant bath gels and lotions. Or maybe you can get them a gift certificate to a masseuse or a half-day at a salon or spa.

No doubt you know some of your secretary¡¯s outside interests and hobbies. If they love gardening, get them some tickets to a local home and gardening show, a gift certificate to a nursery or a pail of gardening tools and seeds. Maybe your secretary loves going to movies or plays. Buy some tickets to a local theatrical performance or a gift certificate for a night at the movies or maybe a basket of their favorite DVDs and some popcorn. If they are heavily involved in a charity organization like United Way or the Make A Wish Foundation, make a donation to their charity. If your secretary comes in every day with a coffee in their hand, make them a basket of gourmet coffees and chocolates, or get them their own coffee/espresso maker to put near their desk. If you have a prime parking spot, let your secretary have it for the week. If you have the authority to do so and don¡¯t have many pressing projects on the table, give your secretary the rest of the day off after lunch.
