Prayer is an integral part of many of our lives, and it helps us to deal with the struggles and injustices in our world. There are five tiers of prayer: first, personal prayer; second, intimate prayer; third, small group prayer; fourth, church prayer; and fifth, community prayer. Integrating each tier into your personal practice of faith will make you a spiritually well-rounded individual.
Personal prayer is exactly what it sounds like: prayers that you make alone, just with you and God present. You can exercise personal prayer at any time and in any place. You can pray to God when you are driving to work, when you are cleaning the dishes, when you are alone in bed. You can use your personal prayer to talk to God about any aspect of your life -- you job, your family, your friends, your insecurities, you sins -- nothing is off-limits. Personal prayer is a very important tier because it helps us to sort through our own thoughts and fears with God's strength. Many people who aren't particularly religious otherwise still engage in personal prayer in times of crisis. Even though they have perhaps not fully committed to God, they are pragmatic and hopeful that if there is a God out there, He will be listening to them in an emergency, and He will help them. In fact, sometimes it takes these moments of crisis for some people to accept God's love and support, and they will explore ways to get God into their life after a traumatic event.
Intimate prayer is prayer that you share with the people in your life that you are the very closest to, such as your husband or wife, your children, your parents, your siblings, or your very best friends. Intimate prayer lets us express our deepest fears and worries with the people that care about us the most and support us the most. You will be able to support the people that you love when they are struggling as well. Remember, the family that prays together, stays together.
Small group prayer is just that -- praying with a small group of people of your faith. A Bible study is a prime example of this tier of prayer. You can share some of your personal prayers here. Most small group praying is done amongst friends, or at least acquaintances, so that everyone feels at ease and welcomed.
Church prayer gives us the opportunity to celebrate our religion with those who share the same spiritual beliefs. A church service is an example of this tier of prayer, and you can exercise it with people whom you know personally, or with strangers who share in a common faith. In church, you should focus more on prayers that affect the entire congregation, not your personal prayers. For example, you might pray that the children in your congregation grow up to practice the values of the church.
Community prayer is intended to be prayer that can apply to any religious or spiritual background. Even if you are a Christian, this type of prayer is meant to comfort people through positive words, not specific religious beliefs. If there is a local tragedy, for example, you shouldn't use a prayer from the Bible for community prayer; rather, you could join hands and have a moment of silence, prayer for those involved, that they will have the strength to persevere. This tier is different from the other four tiers because you have to censor the type of prayers you vocalize so as not to offend anyone's personal beliefs. |
