WEDDING AND RECEPTION IDEAS: NORTHERN CALIFORNIA

If you¡¯re planning to get married in Northern California, there¡¯s no shortage of beautiful and unique locations to accommodate any size party.  Whether you love the ocean, the mountains, the big cities or the old fashioned small towns, the following list will help you get started in finding the perfect backdrop for saying ¡°I do.¡±

SAN FRANCISCO

What better metropolis conjures glamour and romance than the City by the Bay?  Although this venue can set you back a small fortune if you¡¯re doing things on the grand scale, San Francisco¡¯s breathtaking hotels (The Hyatt Regency, The Mark Hopkins), spectacular Gothic cathedrals, and expansive parks (Golden Gate and the Japanese Tea Gardens) will make it a day to remember in more ways than one.  You and your out of town guests will enjoy the sightseeing treats offered by Fisherman¡¯s Wharf, Pier 39, Chinatown, the Red and White Fleet bay cruises, or maybe even a visit to Alcatraz, former home of some of the country¡¯s most notorious criminals.  And if perchance they haven¡¯t done their shopping yet for your wedding presents, feel free to direct them to the Embarcadero, Ghirardelli Square (yes, the same people who make chocolate!), or Union Square in the Financial District.  San Francisco can also boast virtually any ethnic cuisine in the world which will make your reception and catering options limitless.

MONTEREY PENINSULA

Not far from the San Francisco Bay area is the Monterey Peninsula, famous for its Cannery Row, Monterey Aquarium, Pacific Grove B&B¡¯s, the trendy shops and restaurants of Carmel-by-the-Sea, world class golf resorts, and the majesty of Big Sur.  Whether you opt for a hotel or resort wedding or exchange rings on a barefoot beach with the Pacific Ocean roaring in the background, the central coast is a sublime getaway and always picture perfect.  You may even want to pledge your troth at the historic Carmel Mission or the Pebble Beach Church in the Forest.  I even know of one pair of golfing enthusiasts who blocked a tee time so that they could get married on the green and wrap up with an elegant lunch at the Inn at Spanish Bay.

THE WINE COUNTRY

Have you considered getting married in a hot air balloon?  Set your marriage soaring in the Napa wine country, where you can also exchange your vows on the grounds of vintage Franciscan wineries or, if it¡¯s just your immediate family, the coziness of a Victorian bed and breakfast inn.  For a truly unique reception idea, plan a picnic theme (the V. Sattui Vineyards in St. Helena would be ideal) or hold your reception aboard one of the historic wine trains that run through the area.  You may also want to consider a longer trek that will take you to the wine country of Mendocino.  If its seaside village atmosphere looks strangely familiar, it was used as the fictional Cabot Cove in Angela Lansbury¡¯s detective series, ¡°Murder She Wrote.¡±  Just up the road from town, you can also celebrate your nuptials at Heritage House, the same scenic retreat where Alan Alda and Ellen Burstyn played tryst-mates for decades in the hit film ¡°Same Time, Next Year.¡±

THE GOLD COUNTRY

The quaint townships that straddle Highway 49 date from the days of the California Gold Rush and will satisfy any bride¡¯s wish for an old fashioned ceremony and reception.  Jackson, Amador, and Sutter Creek have a plentiful share of inns, historic churches, and picturesque countryside for photo ops.  There are also vintage hotels, Wild West saloons, and horse and carriage rides for hire so that you can step back into the past at the same time the two of you are stepping forward together into the future.  Recommendation for a charming reception locale you might otherwise overlook: the Amador Hotel in the town of Amador.

LAKE TAHOE

Snow, anyone?  If your wedding dream includes a winter wonderland, Lake Tahoe is a popular destination for weddings, receptions and, of course, snuggly honeymoons.  There are also a number of couples who actually get married in Reno, then hop back over the state line for the party portion of their festivities.  Inns, ski lodges and major hotel chains offer plenty of variety and price ranges.  The only disadvantage is that you need to book far in advance, owing to the number of people who flock to the region for its fabulous skiing. If summer is more your style, Lake Tahoe and the surrounding mountains make for a beautiful setting for an outdoor ceremony.  Boats plus crew are even available if you want to get married on the water.  It¡¯s also useful to note that restaurant and catering service prices tend to be lower than you would expect, owing to the emphasis on saving your money so that you can then spend it all on gambling at the nearby casinos.
