When you¡¯re having a bad hair day, it would take an act of God Himself to tame that mane enough to make it look good down. You¡¯d have to start all over, washing, drying, and styling your hair to de-frizz or remove the mysterious crease or curl that resulted from some kind of odd positioning of your sleeping body (some would argue that a bad hair day¡¯s better than waking up with a crick in your neck from that same sleeping position). The best option? Put it up or pin it back.
Medium to longer-haired girls have it easiest on those dreaded days when their hair just won¡¯t behave. The most oft-used solution for a bad hair day is the ponytail. High, low, straight back or slightly poofed, this is a classic. A ponytail can look fun and casual (think of back when you were a little girl, or when you¡¯re painting your living room and just want to keep stray hairs out of your face, not win a beauty pageant) or glamorous (plenty of Hollywood stars have worn ponytails with their award ceremony attire). Brush the hair up and back, tie with an elastic band, spritz with a bit of hairspray, and head out the door. You can leave a few face-framing pieces out to soften the look or tie a scarf around your head or the base of the ponytail. You may also add a barrette to create a more unique style. If the ends look stringy or limp, you can always opt for a bun. Pull the hair up as if you were going to put it in a ponytail, but before putting in the elastic, twist your hair counterclockwise and around the base. Secure it with bobby pins, hairsticks, or an elastic. If you want, you can add one of those funky hairpieces around the base; just make sure it matches the color and texture of your own hair fairly well.
Did you slap the snooze button one or two too many times and now find yourself with not enough time to wash, condition, and style your hair? You¡¯ll probably still want to put it up or pin it away from your face, but put a bit of baby powder in your hands, and run it through your roots. Use just a little at a time. You can add more, but once you put too much in, you¡¯ve made yourself late for work because you have to wash it, after all. You¡¯d be surprised how much oil this little bit of powder soaks up. Bonus: it smells good! You can get the regular scent, vanilla jasmine, or lavender. This trick also works if you¡¯ve used too many styling products in your hair, leaving it hanging limp and looking oily even though it¡¯s not. Changing your part also ups the volume a bit so your hair won¡¯t look as flat on top as it would otherwise. If you have bangs that are falling flat due to oiliness and the baby powder just isn¡¯t cutting it, wet your bangs at the sink, add a little shampoo, rinse, and style the bangs only. You can save so much time that way!
Short-haired girls have more limited styling options, but they too can style away a bad hair day with the help of hair putty and a decorative bobby pin or headband. Put a small amount of putty on the ends to give a textured appearance and freeze the hair where you want it. Add a bobby pin or small clip/barrette to pull the sides away from the face, and, if there¡¯s enough hair, tuck the ends behind your ears. You may even want to add a bobby pin to the hair right behind your ears; keep these hidden and close to your own hair color. You can also use a thick headband instead of the bobby pins or barrettes. Headbands with about a 1 ?¡± thickness should be enough to hide any annoying locks on the sides of your head or on the top. An alternative to a headband is a colorful scarf. Tie one on, put the knot toward the back of the head, and pull the ends of the scarf over your shoulder. This look is especially cute if you wear medium-sized hoop earrings. You¡¯ll look put-together and nobody has to know what you¡¯re hiding.
Men can get away with the bedhead look fairly easy, but for those who don¡¯t have jobs where that Jude Law look goes over well, there¡¯s nothing a quick wetting down of the hair, application of a small amount of gel, and a quick comb-through with a fine-toothed comb won¡¯t fix. Make sure you run water through your hair, if only at the sink using your hands. Then rub a small amount of gel between your hands, raking through your hair. Finish up by combing or brushing the hair, and it should lie where you put it. If you use ultimate hold gel, your new cowlick should weather even the harshest windstorm.
Fixing a bad hair day isn¡¯t as complicated and frustrating as it seems. You just have to be open to wearing your hair up or styled a bit differently than usual. Don¡¯t fight what your hair¡¯s doing. You¡¯ll waste precious time. You may be bigger than your hair, but it¡¯s more willful. The best thing you can do is cover it up. And if all else fails, wear a hat.
