When you are shopping for winter boots, it¡¯s important to consider where you live and what type of weather you will be wearing the boots in before you decide which brand to buy.
Do you live in the country? Are you slopping through slush, snow and mud on a daily basis? Or, are you an urban dweller, walking mostly on sidewalks that have been shoveled? How cold does it get where you live? Is style more important to you than durability or warmth? Do you prefer tall boots, which can be classy looking with skirts or are shorter boots more your style?
Of course, one of the most important things to look for in footwear is workmanship. Don¡¯t just assume because you are paying a hefty price that everything will be as it should be. Check the stitching and make sure it isn¡¯t sloppy and is finished properly with no loose threads. Look at any seams on the boot, do they seem sturdy or is there extra glue where there shouldn¡¯t be? Be sure to also inspect the inside of the boot for any possible problems, making sure the insoles are properly in place.
In most types of cold weather, traction is important, especially for those icy days of winter. Do the soles have adequate tread to prevent you from slipping and falling? Are the grooves deep enough to offer support on both ice and snow? Check with the salesperson and ask questions about how the boot performs in all kinds of weather for slip resistance.
Make sure the boot is comfortable and that it fits properly. If possible, wear the socks you will be wearing to make sure there is enough room and your feet don¡¯t feel pinched. Some boots offer genuine fleece sock liners for extra warmth and comfort on those bitter cold days and boots that have wool fleece lining can also keep moisture away from your feet.
Find out what temperature the boots can be worn in, which usually can be found out by reading the tag on the footwear. For instance, if you live in a place that gets ¨C say 40 degrees below on occasion, you¡¯ll need a boot that can keep your feet warm on those frigid days. Some boots offer what is called a frost plug, or extra insulation in the heel and forefoot, to give a little bit of extra warmth for your toes and heel.
Is the boot waterproof? If you plan on being in a lot of snow or wet weather, be sure to check this important detail before you buy the boots, or your feet may look very stylish but feel miserable when they get wet. Some boots come with removable inner boots that can help keep your feet dry, warm and comfortable. Do the boots have a snow cuff to keep snow from drifting into your boots?
Another option that some boots offer are removable, replaceable and washable insoles. If you purchase a boot with this type of insole, it can make the boot more valuable by adding years to the life of the boot.
How easy is the boot to get on? Is it easy to remove? If there is a zipper, be sure it zips with ease. If it¡¯s really hard to put the boot on or take it off, most likely you won¡¯t get your money¡¯s worth. After all, who wants to struggle with boots, especially when you¡¯re coming in out of the cold and trying not to track snow all over the house? What you don¡¯t want is a pair of boots that need two people tugging and pulling to get them off. If you buy a pair of boots like that, no matter how much you spend, most likely they will sit at the back of your closet.
Before you spend a lot of money on winter boots, it is a good idea to talk to friends or co-workers to see what brand they have had good experiences with. Find out what boots your peers rely on to keep their feet warm before you go shopping, so that when you are ready to purchase boots, you will be an educated consumer.
