Hosting a new baby shower is exciting. Everyone loves picking out snuggly sleepers and darling stuffed toys. But the fun can start well ahead of the actual party when you browse theme patterns and ideas to decide how to structure your event.
While you don't have to follow a particular theme, adding special characters, colors, or designs that the mother-to-be is fond of can add an extra dimension to your celebration. Here are some ideas to consider:
1. Cherubs, angels, or biblical figurines. Angels add a protective element to the festivities, along with a celestial feeling and hopeful joy. Choose pastels or light prints to adorn paper ware, posters, and gift wrap. Use angelic games, like pin the wings on the angel (You know which game that is adapted from!). Or you can select famous mothers from the Bible, like Eve, Sarah, Rachel, Hannah, Ruth, and Mary, among others, and post paper cutouts or drawings of these inspiring role models.
2. Television or film figures or themes. If the mom-to-be especially enjoys a television show or film category, look for decorations that illustrate the characters, settings, or trademarks of her preferences. For example, you may be able to find Shrek, Princess Diaries, or Lucille Ball imprints. Or have fun making your own on computer software or with art supplies. Julia Roberts (a new mother) or other famous actresses can grace your walls and table to join the celebration.
3. Use baby and girlhood pictures of the mom and her friends. Enlarge these for posters, print images on napkins, and copy them for games. You can provide nostalgic memories in letting the expectant mom reflect on her own childhood in preparing to greet her soon-to-be-born child. Set up a display of pictures, like a mini-gallery, that chronologically display her childhood, young adulthood, and recent years leading up to the present. Include prints from family and friends.
4. Decorate with her favorite colors. Use a tasteful combination for paper plates, cups, and cutlery, intertwining the two with streamers or mixing lavender plates with pink cups, etc. You may want to print invitations and wrap gifts with these colors and related hues that coordinate with them as accents. You also might add a hint of her favorite things to the decor, rather than make them central themes, like music boxes, chocolate, or cats, for example.
5. Say it with flowers. Many women love buds, blossoms, and greenery. Add inexpensive artificial flowers or ivy as centerpieces as decorative touches to the table, around doorways, or as gift adornments. Use a seasonal fern or blossoming plant as a table decoration, then write a number on the bottom of each person's paper plate. Have the guest of honor think of a number between one and however many guests there are, and whoever has the number gets to take home the centerpiece.
The main idea is to decorate for fun and be creative while having a good time. You can ask the pregnant mom about ideas or surprise her with one of your own. Have a good time welcoming the new little addition!
