We see those commercials all the time where the husband and wife sit anxiously in the restroom staring intently at a little stick to see if a plus sign for positive or a negative sign for negative will emerge magically on the tip. They are waiting to find out the results of their pregnancy test. If you are at all concerned that you may be pregnant, you will want to first take a pregnancy test, of course. If it comes back positive, consult your physician for a second pregnancy test to determine the accuracy of the first. What are these symptoms, however, that have spurred you to take the pregnancy test in the first place? Here is a list of the most common symptoms of pregnancy.
* As silly as it may sound, some women just get a feeling in their gut that they are pregnant. Call it psychic or call it a sixth sense, but some women, especially women who have been pregnant before, can actually sense when they have become pregnant.
* Probably the most common symptom of pregnancy and one that shows up in movies and television shows most often is missing a period. However, there are many reasons why you might skip a period, some of them having nothing to do with pregnancy. For instance, you may have more stress than usual, you may have recently gained or lost a significant amount of weight, you may have just recently gone off the birth control pill or you may have other hormonal problems.
* Breast tenderness is also a symptom of pregnancy. Your breasts may feel sore or tender for no reason, or they may seem a little larger than normal. Once again, this could be a sign of something entirely different like hormonal changes due to use of the pill or PMS.
* Some women feel nauseated at different points of the day while other women report vomiting. If these symptoms are, in fact, a result of a pregnancy, they will usually show up anywhere from two weeks to two months after conceiving.
* There are also a group of women who report a more frequent need to urinate. Again, this may be a sign of something completely different like a urinary tract infection or other bladder problem.
* Women who are pregnant also report feeling a sense of fatigue. If you are more tired than usual or find yourself taking more naps or having a hard time getting up in the morning, there is a chance you could be pregnant.
* A symptom called implantation bleeding may be another indicator of pregnancy. This is one of the earliest signs of pregnancy and occurs when the embryo becomes implanted onto the wall of the uterus. During this time, women may experience both slight cramping and spotting.
* General aches, especially in the back, and headaches are common early symptoms of pregnancy. This is usually in direct relation to hormonal changes.
* Another pregnancy symptom often showcased in movies is the tendency to have cravings for certain foods. Movies always use the combination of sweets and pickles, but the food craving can be almost anything for a pregnant woman. |
