Many women today wish to give birth naturally 每 that is, without drugs of any kind. One of the best ways to achieve this is to develop the ability to completely relax all of your muscles to allow your body to do its job. Even if you are not planning a natural birth, using the relaxation techniques described below can help your labor be shorter and easier.
Importance of practice
It is extremely important to practice these relaxation techniques before you go into labor. Ideally, start practicing relaxation during the first trimester. Practice makes perfect, and you want to be so practiced at relaxing that you can relax even under the most challenging circumstances. Practice these techniques with your husband or labor partner, and let them know what they can do you help you 每 both during practice and while you*re in labor.
Abdominal breathing
One technique to help a laboring woman to relax is for her to focus on breathing through her abdomen. Abdominal breathing is actually healthier, as it uses the lungs more efficiently. Additionally, breathing through the abdomen makes it much easier to relax the surrounding muscles 每 the very ones that many laboring women have a tendency to tense up.
To practice abdominal breathing, first lie down on your back and lay a book (a light one, please) or some other object on your belly. Focus on making the object move up and down with each breath. Don*t breathe with your chest, which will make your ribcage move up and down, but rather breathe with your abdomen.
Slow dancing
Many women find slow dancing during labor to be very relaxing. This is different from the type of slow dancing you might do on a dance floor, however. You will be leaning against your partner with your partner supporting a portion of your weight. Rock back and forth through a contraction and focus on letting go and de-tensing your muscles as you sway rhythmically.
Hands and Knees
It is remarkably easy to relax in the hands and knees position. Make sure your knees are on a well-padded surface and that you are comfortable. Some women prefer to drape their torso over a pile of pillows, cushions, or an exercise ball to lessen the pressure on their hands and arms. Once you are comfortable and settled, focus on letting all of the tension drain from your muscles.
Imagery
Imagery can be a laboring woman*s best friend. There are countless images a woman could use to help her relax. She could imagine that she is standing in a shower and the water hits the top of her head and runs down her body, taking all of the tension with it. She could imagine that she is floating in a pool or on the ocean, sunbathing and relaxing. She could even take herself back to a time in her life when she was particularly relaxed, or to a favorite place, or even a favorite time.
Tense and relax
One technique that many women find helpful is to tense and then relax each muscle in their body, one at a time. This technique helps bring awareness of which muscles are tense and which are relaxed, and allows a woman to consciously focus on relaxing the muscles.
Atmosphere
Many women misunderstand how important it is to have the right atmosphere during their labor. Most people find it easier to relax, let go, and give up control when they are with a small number of people who they trust explicitly and when they are in a darkened, quiet room. While you*re practicing at home, try turning the lights as bright as they will go, turning up the stereo, and turning on the TV while you try to relax. Next, put on some soft music and turn the lights down 每 you will probably find that it was easier to completely relax in the darkened, quiet environment. While your family and friends will understandably want to be included in your big day, consider limiting the number of people in the delivery room with you to just a few people who you know will be supportive and who will not interrupt your important job of relaxing.
