Pregnancy is an exciting and joyful time, but it can also be stressful. There is so much to do, and so many new things to shop for. While shopping for baby clothes and baby furnishings is one of the most enjoyable aspects of pregnancy, shopping for maternity clothes can be one of the hardest.
Decades ago, maternity clothing was anything but fashionable. The selections were limited to such things as giant muumuus with giant bows that made pregnant women feel like clowns at worst or baby dolls at best. The idea was to draw attention away from the tummy.
Fortunately, times have changed. Now the pregnant tummy is emphasized as a good and beautiful thing. And it's easy to find maternity clothes that will help you look attractive and even sexy throughout your pregnancy.
Maternity clothes can be expensive, especially considering that you'll only be wearing them for a few months.
Below are some tips to help you get the most for your money.
Seek Out Bargains and Freebies
If this is not your first pregnancy, hopefully you held on to your old maternity clothes. Or, if this is your first pregnancy, perhaps you have relatives or friends who can pass their second-hand maternity clothes on to you. In either case, you'll have a few pieces to get you started. Then just add a few new pieces to lend some contemporary pizzazz to your wardrobe.
Also check out your local consignment shops, where you may find some great bargains on high-quality, second-hand maternity clothing.
Shop in Your Own Closet
Go through your pre-pregnancy wardrobe and look for items that you might be able to wear through some or all of your pregnancy. Cropped knit tops that end above the tummy, stretchy sweaters, stretch pants, yoga pants, and sweatsuits can serve you well, sometimes through the entire pregnancy.
Mix and Match
Invest in a few versatile, classic pieces that you can mix and match. A few well-chosen black or neutral bottoms can go a long way when paired up with a variety of colorful tops and accessories.
Buy For the Long Term
Look for stretchy knit fabrics that will expand as you expand. These fashionable and sexy fabrics can take you all the way through the third trimester in style, and will also come in handy during those first few weeks after you give birth, until your tummy returns to its pre-pregnancy size.
Some pregnant women choose to buy regular (non-maternity) pants and jeans in a size larger than their normal size, instead of maternity pants. While this can work for some women who do not gain much weight during their pregnancy, the coarse fabric around the waist and tummy can be uncomfortable. Most women prefer to invest in a few pairs of maternity pants or jeans, which feature a stretchy tummy panel that will expand as your tummy expands and provide comfortable support.
Underwear
Don't forget the underwear. Some pregnant women get through their pregnancies with their regular bikini underwear, and some invest in bikini underwear one size larger. Others feel more comfortable in granny-style maternity underwear. You might want to try a pair or two of maternity underwear, and then decide what works best for you.
Also choose a bra option that best suits your style and body type. Some smaller-breasted women can get through an entire pregnancy with a couple of stretchy sports bras. Others prefer the support of a maternity/nursing bra. If you plan to nurse your baby, shop early for a maternity/nursing bra so that you'll have plenty of time to adjust to it.
Hosiery is important as well. While some women like the supportive panel in maternity pantyhose, others prefer the convenience of thigh-high stockings while pregnant (which they can continue to wear after the pregnancy). Choose the option that feels best to you. If you do choose thigh-highs, buy the type with the elasticized band around the top. These will stay up without garters. You probably won't want to deal with garters during your third trimester.
Shoes
Shoes are a very important part of your maternity wardrobe, as they will help your feet support your body as it changes. As your tummy expands, your center of gravity will shift. Flat or low-heeled shoes will better help you to keep your balance.
Also, many women experience foot swelling during pregnancy. For this reason, open shoes like sandals, clogs, or sling-backs, especially in a flexible material, can be more comfortable during pregnancy. For those who want to spend a little more for guaranteed foot comfort, special maternity shoes are now available from some manufacturers. These can be a worthwhile investment for pregnant women whose jobs require them to spend a lot of time on their feet.
Invest in the Future
After your baby is born, don't throw away your maternity wardrobe. If you don't plan to have another baby, then store your maternity clothing for possible use by a friend or relative, or take it to a consignment shop. Passing your maternity wardrobe on to others is the ultimate way to get the most for your money and help others to do so at the same time.
