WHY BOTHER KEEPING MAGICAL RECORDS?
The same reason a scientist carefully records the conditions and results of his experiments, or a cook writes down and files away new recipes: so that you can repeat the results exactly, improve upon them if need be, or learn where you went wrong.
If you wish to continue to grow in your magical abilities, keeping records will help you reach your goals by taking out the guess work. For example, have you had more success with candle magic, or with herbal brews? Was that spell for a promotion you did two years ago performed on the full moon, or the new moon? What did you say or do that caused that one spell to go amiss? Few of us have infallible memories. Even if you are one of the few that do, it can help to examine something spread out in front of you in black and white, where you can see connections you may have missed.
WHAT GOES INTO A MAGICAL RECORD?
A magical record should show all of the important elements related to your magical work. Remember that the outcome of your magical work is not only affected by the ritual, but by the conditions surrounding it. Some things you may want to regularly include in your magical records are:
TYPE OF MAGIC: Candle magic, crystal magic, herbal magic, ritual magic, folk magic, etc.
TIMING: day, date, hour, moon phase and any other astrological correspondences.
ATMOSPHERIC CONDITIONS: weather, electromagnetic field readings, universal phenomena (eclipses, meteor showers, etc.).
PERSONAL CONDITIONS: stage in menstrual cycle, emotional state, physical state, mood, etc.
TOOLS: ritual tools, mundane tools used to prepare the ritual area or components, mind triggers, etc.
COMPONENTS: Herbs, candles, string, stones, brews, incense, etc.
DEITIES: Which deities were called, and how?
INCANTATIONS OR CHANTS: record word for word.
MEDITATIONS: any visualizations or astral work done during ritual.
METHODS: step by step instructions, method for cleansing, charging, circle casting, etc.
RESULTS: How you felt during and after ritual, success or lack of success
ORGANIZING YOUR MAGICAL FILES
The best way to keep your magical records is to create a file for it so that all the information you need will be at your fingertips. This can be kept in a file cabinet or folder, as part of your book of shadows, or even updated on your computer filing system.
It may seem very business-like, but making yourself a form with a space to fill in all of the elements relating to your ritual, from preparation to execution to results, can be a very efficient and effective way of keeping track of your magical endeavors. Before a ritual, you can use the form as a spell planning check sheet, filling in your requirements and methods. Immediately after you can record your experiences and impressions, and later, any results derived from the spell. File them away somewhere, and the information will be at your fingertips when you need it.
WHAT CAN I LEARN FROM MY MAGICAL RECORDS?
First of all, keeping detailed magical records can teach you many things about your weaknesses and strengths in your magical studies. You may find, after looking through several months worth of records, that you have a higher success rate using crystals than using herbs. You might discover that certain times of the month you are more magically charged than others. You might realize that your rituals in which you have evoked the Goddess Artemis have been much more effective than when you didn't. All these things may have been overlooked until you sat down and compared your various spell work on paper.
Secondly, you can always use your records to repeat a spell without having to put as much preparation work into it. If you like to do a money spell every year before the holidays, you won't have to trudge out all the books to get down the planetary alignment and incense blend again. If the spell the year before was successful for you, it will be outlined in your records and you can simply follow the instructions again, knowing you've had good results with it.
Finally, if a spell did not work for you, having a record to go over will help you to discern what the problem was. Did you leave out a step? Did you use the wrong essential oil? Were you unclear or too vague in your chant or meditation on the results you wanted to achieve? Was the spell on the right track, but need a bit of tweaking? Not only can going over your records help you figure out why a spell might have been a dud, it can also help you to figure out what might have caused it to backfire and how to reverse the effects.
Magic takes a lot of study, and a lot of trial and error in order for us to grow and become adept spell casters. Keeping a record of all of your endeavors is a practical way to speed up that process, so you don't end up going in circles. It will reduce your misses and help you zone in on how to accomplish more hits. |
