The best man can play a more important role in your wedding than you might realize.  Believe it or not, he is there to do more than give a goofy speech at the dinner table.  Knowing his duties means fewer things you and your fianc¨¦e will have to do yourselves.    Of course, that does mean you¡¯ll need to finally learn to trust your husband¡¯s poker-playing, beer-drinking best buddy.  Well, for one day at least.  

Actually the best man doesn¡¯t need to be that beer-drinking buddy.  Your fianc¨¦ is free to choose just about anyone he wants to fill those shoes.  The best man can be a brother or relative, a father, a son if he has one, or even a woman.  (She would be known as the honor attendant in that case.)  Sounds strange, but some men do have females as best friends or perhaps they have a daughter instead of a son whom they wish to include in their special day.  Of course, traditionally speaking, the best man is the above mentioned best friend.

Duties:

The best man should first and foremost be the groom¡¯s personal confidant.  As the wedding details fall into place, his duties slowly increase

Depending on the number of groomsmen there will be, the groom¡¯s increasingly busy schedule might make it difficult for him to get in touch with all of the groomsmen.  The best man can be given a list of contact information for each or the groomsmen so he can aid the groom in passing along pertinent information.

The best man should also help gather up the other groomsmen when it is time to be fitted for tuxedos (or whatever it is the groomsmen will be wearing).  While the other groomsmen are thereafter responsible for their own attire, the best man should pick up both his own and the groom¡¯s clothes at least the day before the wedding. He should bring along a handful of safety pins and other such items should an emergency arise with groomsmen or the groom himself.  

In some cases, the best man can also act as the escort for the groom.  If the groom is riding alone, check to see if perhaps he would prefer to be escorted by his buddy.  If so, allow the best man to arrange for transportation, including the place and of course the appropriate time for pickup.  

The groom is responsible for holding the ring during the ceremony, but before there is a ceremony, he should make certain that the groom remembers to bring the marriage license with him.  Perhaps it would even be easier on the groom to hand off the license a day or two before and let the best man remember it for him.

During the ceremony he escorts the maid of honor, and signs the marriage license as the witness.  

During the reception, he makes the toast, second to the father of the bride who traditionally gives the first speech.  As the reception wraps up, the best man should be responsible for making sure all the vendors were paid and tipped appropriately.  To help him do this, give him cash or check stuffed envelopes marked for each vendor a day before the wedding.  Make sure he has exactly the right amount of money for each vendor, if not a little more (to be returned to you of course) just in case.

Of course, let¡¯s not forget the bachelor party.  The best man should schedule and plan the party, although he is certainly welcome to ask other groomsmen for help in this regard.  He should tailor the party according to the groom¡¯s tastes.  If the groom prefers a laid back affair over a raucous event, then what he says should go.  Of course, he should also be given a few surprises!
