June weddings, spring weddings, Christmas weddings ¡ª everyone has their own ideas about the best times. However, in most parts of the United States, fall is an ideal time for a wedding. Even in the hottest parts of the Southwest, the weather has begun to moderate, and snow hasn¡¯t started falling in the Northeast, or upper Midwest. The fall colors add a picturesque touch, and the weather is generally good.

For the purposes of this article, a ¡°fall¡± wedding will be considered one between Sept. 1 and Dec. 1. Obviously, there are a couple of days to avoid during this time. Labor Day weekend is not a popular wedding time, simply because so many people are out of town. Thanksgiving weekend is out for the same reason. This writer¡¯s family is football crazy, so I looked at the football schedules for the two major universities in my state and found a weekend in October that had both teams on the road that day. If there are players in the family, this may be a major consideration.

The weather is generally nice in the fall. It does tend to rain in the Southeast, and may snow in the Northeast, but usually, weddings before Nov. 1 are not too prone to be snowy in the Northeast. In the Southeast, anyway, October is usually a dry month, with day after day of golden sunshine and mild temperatures throughout the day. The weather, in general during the fall,  is milder and not as unpredictable as spring. Thus, outdoor weddings may be planned with more confidence, and with an expectation of the guests being more comfortable, and not sweltering miserably.

Brides also have a wide choice of gowns for a fall wedding. A bride can choose a dress with a halter or strapless neckline, short sleeves, or long sleeves and a high neck. Any style will go for a fall wedding, with the long-sleeved style more for the later fall dates. Mothers of the bride and attendants also have a wide variety of choices, since they will not have to worry about summer¡¯s heat or winter¡¯s cold. Attendants will not have to wear filmier, cooler layers. They can opt for shantung or another heavier fabric, since they do not have to dress for heat. However, a flowing style is also appropriate for a fall wedding, if that is what the attendants want to wear. 

Colors are easy to choose for fall. The bride can go with traditional warm colors for an autumn theme, or can look for alternate colors that are just as appropriate. Cranberry, navy, silver, mallard teal, hunter green and the like are all great colors for a fall wedding. 

Florists also have many options for a fall wedding. A bride¡¯s bouquet may feature autumn leaves for accent, or for decorating the church pews. Peach, golden or orange roses may also be featured in bouquets or boutonni¨¨res. Or, the bride can opt for a traditional red rose theme. Most florists are able to get most flowers in the fall, so a bride has a wide range of options.

Ferns are still beautiful in the fall and can be used as decoration, along with other fall flowers. Ivy is always a good choice for accents, for twining about candelabra and festooning tables and pews. It hasn¡¯t started to die back yet, so it will be fresh and ready for use. 

Brides also have many, many options for reception food in the fall. They can serve summery tea sandwiches, and hearty cheeses, all at the same reception. The transition nature of fall allows for a lot of leeway in food and d¨¦cor. 

Even if the wedding day dawns rainy, the bright colors and warm fall themes will help make the day beautiful. Fall, indeed, is a great time of year for a wedding.
