If you live in a small town, you might think there are very limited choices for locations at which to have wedding receptions.  Often couples in small towns have their weddings in the same places year after year and never think about different possibilities. There are many places in small towns to have memorable wedding receptions; even though the sites in your town may be limited, you can use your imagination to make your reception different and unique.

1. PLACE OF WORSHIP HALL

Many brides dream of a traditional church wedding, and if you are a member of a certain religion, you will probably want to have your wedding there.  Most churches have reception halls attached to the church and these can be good spots for a reception, especially if you are expecting a large number of people to attend or plan to have a dance.  A kitchen is usually provided and comes in handy whether you are preparing food yourself or having the affair catered.  If the reception hall feels too large for your party, consider renting trellis dividers to make a smaller, more intimate spot, or using a smaller room in the building.  The advantage to using a church building for a reception is that your guests do not have to travel a long distance from the wedding to the reception.  A disadvantage is that some churches may have rules for building use that would prohibit the type of reception you might want.  You can have a very nice, traditional wedding reception in a hall attached to a place of worship.

2. YOUR HOME/RELATIVE¡¯S HOME

You can have a reception in your home even if it¡¯s not very large or elaborate.  Imaginative decorating can do wonders for the plainest location, and actually, small rooms are much easier to decorate than large ones.  Choose the largest room for your reception, move out all unnecessary furniture, and add some rented or borrowed tables and chairs.  If the weather permits, have an outdoor reception.  With the right rentals, you can make your home or lawn into a beautiful reception site.  An advantage to using your home is that you will not have to pay a rental cost for the use of the building; a disadvantage is that parking may be limited and all the preparations may become a burden on your family.

3. PARK/BEACH/NATURALLY BEAUTIFUL SPOT IN YOUR TOWN

Even most small towns have a park or two, and if you fancy an outdoor reception, a park or other location that has natural beauty can be a good spot for a wedding reception.  Wedding photos taken outdoors in a beautiful setting are an advantage to having an outdoor reception; who wouldn¡¯t want a waterfall, lake, or breathtaking foliage in the background?  A disadvantage is weather; you can never tell when rain or bad weather will occur, so make sure you pick a spot that has some type of cover.  Many parks allow you to rent pavilions or rustic rooms; at the beach you could rent cabanas in case of rain.  Outdoor locations also require many rentals unless you have a very casual, simple affair.

4. HALLS

Most small towns have organizations that meet in large halls; the Elks, VFW, Knights of Columbus, etc. often will rent you the hall for a reception.  It¡¯s sometimes difficult to decorate such a large space, but included are usually a kitchen, restrooms, plenty of tables and chairs, adequate parking, and other things you would have to rent separately in another location.  Creative decorating can overcome the vast spaces in the hall, and if you¡¯re having a dance, you will need a lot of space.  Dividing the hall into separate spaces can help break up the area; have a space for food, one for dancing, one for a gift display, one for a photo display of the wedding couple, etc.  Come up with some ingenious table arrangements and make the hall an ideal spot for your wedding reception.

5. BED-AND-BREAKFAST

Many small towns, especially those in scenic areas that draw tourists, have a number of bed-and-breakfast establishments.  For small weddings, a bed-and-breakfast could be a wonderful location for a reception.  Advantages to using a bed-and-breakfast for your reception are that many already have beautiful decorations in place, both indoors and outdoors, most will provide excellent catering, and your out-of-town guests could stay there.  A disadvantage could be space if you want to invite a large number of guests.

6. FARMS/BARNS

If you live in a small town in a rural area, there are probably some farms and barns that would offer good locations for country receptions.  Barn dances can be lots of fun for your guests, and they don¡¯t require expensive decorating.  Hire a barbecue wagon, a lively band, and tell your guests to wear their jeans and boots for a night of fun.  An advantage to a country location is there¡¯s plenty of parking; a disadvantage is that the barn might require some cleaning to be suitable for a reception.  Many farm buildings connected with businesses such as orchards, farmers¡¯ markets, etc. are kept in good shape and are available for rent for special occasions.

7. COLLEGE CAMPUS/SCHOOLS

Many small towns have community colleges, schools, or even day care centers that have spacious rooms available for rent.  A weekend night would be a good time to have a wedding reception in a school facility, since most of the rooms are only used during the weekdays.  Some colleges and high schools have organizational rooms that have attached kitchens, stages for a band, restrooms, and other handy features for a reception.  Most of these facilities rent for fairly low costs, but many dates are already taken on an annual basis.  If you want to rent a space at a school for your reception, you will have to plan around their dates.

8. COUNTRY CLUB

Country clubs are ideal locations for a wedding reception.  Many in small towns are quite reasonable in cost when compared to other venues.  Advantages of having your reception at a country club are that they will usually provide excellent catering, many of the items you would have to rent at other locations are already provided, and there is usually a golf course or pool for lovely photos.  Many country clubs will rent their space and services for a reception even if you are not a member of the club.

9. RESTAURANT/CLUB/INN 

Some restaurants and inns in small towns have rooms especially for large groups.  Having your reception in a restaurant or hotel makes catering easy; some places will give you the room for free if you hire them to cater the affair.  Most places will help you with decorating, and the tables, chairs, dishes, silverware and other things you may have to rent in other venues are already there, included with the room.  Whether you want a sit-down dinner, a casual buffet, or just cake and punch, a restaurant or hotel is an easy choice for a reception if you don¡¯t want to have to worry with a lot of details.  A disadvantage might be that there would be lots of other customers at the place while you¡¯re having your wedding reception if you don¡¯t rent the whole site.  An advantage to a hotel site is that your out-of-town guests could stay there.

10. COMMUNITY CENTER

Even the smallest of towns usually has a community center that can be rented for events such as receptions.  Usually these buildings are rather plain, since they are used for all types of activities, but chairs and tables are generally available, they have kitchens, and the price is usually quite reasonable.  With the right decorating, you can make a community center look very festive for your reception, and they are built in areas with plenty of parking for your guests.  A disadvantage for busy community centers is that you may not have a lot of time to decorate, since many activities are frequently held there and you may have to share the day with other events. 

If you are planning a wedding and live in a small town, drive around your town and look for suitable locations.  You may have overlooked the beautiful amphitheater at the park, the stunning rose garden in your grandmother¡¯s backyard, or the cute little restaurant serving delicious desserts.  Ask your friends for ideas, and study the wedding announcements in the newspaper for additional locales.  After you decide just what type of wedding you want -  traditional or modern, money¡¯s no object or inexpensive, formal or casual ¨C it should be easier to choose a location.  A wedding reception in a small town can be just as memorable as one in a big city venue; you just have to use a little more imagination.
