It used to be that young people grew up together in the same community, attended the same schools, and enjoyed the same fun activities on weekends. Nowadays, however, our society has become so diverse that teenagers grow up, go to college, get a job, and sometimes move far away. Finding a potential spouse is no longer as much a matter of going steady with the girl next door; it's more like a getting acquainted on the job or at the supermarket.

Supermarket? That's right. A recent study of several recently married couples revealed that the two locations where a majority of them met their spouses was on the job or at the grocery store. Imagine falling in love at the copy machine or over the Brussels sprouts!

In addition to these unlikely settings for romance, here are five more that may harbor the love of your life:

1. Check out your neighborhood. Keep your eyes peeled at the next block party, be it for fireworks or a garage sale. It may be that there is someone who is looking for a mate who shares your interests, or others that are just as interesting. Getting to know your neighbors can lead to more acquaintances and greater security, and it's a great way to take your time and observe how someone lives on a day-to-day basis before deciding whether to take the initiative and embark on a friendship or dating relationship.

2. Take in some culture. Sidewalk art shows, a classic pianist performance, a nationally-renowned public speaker, or the Russian ballet all make wonderful opportunities for absorbing mind-expanding ideas while possibly bumping into Mr. and Miss Right. Invite a family member, friend, or co-worker to go with you rather than show up alone, but be open to meeting new people, whether it's the person in the next seat or an interesting conversationalist at intermission.

3. Enroll in a course. Browse local fliers to think about taking a car maintenance course or one that teaches gourmet cooking. Chances are those are the kind of classes that may draw single people as well as married folk. Indulge in a hobby you enjoy or a new skill you want to learn. Enjoy the opportunity of sharing class discussion and possible study groups with others who share your interests.

4. Engage in a hobby. Take up photography and practice in the park. Or join a reading club and attend the monthly discussion groups. Start writing poetry and post it for online reviews. There are dozens of hobby groups you can join to learn more about something that occupies your free time as well as become acquainted with others who do the same thing. If you can't find a hobby group to join, start one by reserving a meeting room, possibly for no fee since the group is not for profit, at the community center or public library. Then post fliers all over the neighborhood or publish a notice in the local newspaper.

5. Join a church. An earlier study suggested that many younger people, as well as a certain percentage of divorced or widowed folks, met spouses while at worship service or related functions. Most reported a high level of satisfaction years after the wedding. There is some truth in the old saying, "The family that prays together stays together." 

Whatever your social interests in life, get involved in groups or activities with other people who feel the same way. You may just meet someone who is looking for the same thing you are! Even if you don't, you might become acquainted with a member who, in turn, will introduce you to a friend or relative who may turn out to be the lead role in your romantic dreams.
