Everyone gets peeling lips now and then. In the winter, cold, dry air can sweep over your mouth and leave your lips feeling raw and chapped. When summer rolls around, the hot sun's rays or getting dehydrated from high temperatures can crack or tear the skin on your lips.
Here are some of the things you can do to prevent problems like these from making your lips unattractive or uncomfortable:
1. Drink plenty of water. Have eight glasses, eight ounces each, of clear fluid each day--or more. This helps to keep your body moist inside and out, including your lips and the corners of your mouth, where dried or frequent spittle can lead to cracked lines or tender sores. In cold or warm weather, your body needs lots of water to work the way it is designed to. Water consumption can help to preserve your skin's elasticity and appearance.
2. Use lip balm. Wax-based products like Chapstick provide a protective covering to the lips to prevent free radicals, the environment, and the weather from taking their toll on this sensitive area. Even if you naturally bite or chew your lips, wearing lip balm can reduce the frequency with which you practice these habits. Keep a tube of balm in your purse, your pocket, in the bathroom, or on the kitchen counter for handy access. In fact, have several tubes available for convenient use at any time.
3. Apply sunscreen to your lip area, too. Don't just use sunscreen on your face alone. Add a bit to your lips and around your mouth area to protect the skin in those places from potential sun damage. People's faces often tend to be more dry about the mouth and chin areas as part of the tradition "T-zone" that cosmetologists address with a range of products. Don't let the sun get to your lips and cause lines or even skin cancer.
Wear makeup, including lipstick, with an SPF of 45 or higher.
4. Avoid hyperallergenic lipstick or lip liner. Some brands contain ingredients that can cause your lips to peel after its use in something like either a sensitivity or an allergic reaction. Ask the makeup counter sales assistant for help in choosing a lipstick that won't have this effect on your lips. Use a lip liner to help define and shade the edges of your lips, which may prevent dry, peeling skin around the lip area.
5. Stay away from environmental factors that can damage your skin. Smoking cigarettes or chewing tobacco, drinking alcohol, working with heavy-duty chemicals or fumes, and other factors may irritate your lips and lead to peeling or cracking. Wear a face mask when you're around strong smells or emissions. Don't wash your face with strong or harsh soap. Treat your lips gently to help care for this delicate skin.
Protect your lips through steps like these to prevent unsightly cracking or peeling. Following a few, easy steps may make the difference between discomfort and ease or looking unsightly or neat.
