UPSCALE COCKTAIL PARTY
If you feel like ringing in the New Year with a touch of class and sophistication, then you should plan an upscale cocktail party. Invite your guests by mail, and make sure to tell them to dress in cocktail attire. You will need plenty of champagne and sparkling wine, and you will want to have a well-stocked home bar to accommodate your guests. Have fresh fruits, vegetables, and mint leaves on hand to garnish any special drink requests. Serve appetizers and finger foods, such as tiny cucumber and cream cheese sandwiches, Swedish meatballs on toothpicks, pigs in a blanket, shrimp cocktail, sweet and sour chicken pieces, and cheese puffs. You should also have various vegetable and fruit platters with an assortment of dips available. Have some sweets on hand, such as ¨¦clairs, fudge squares, assorted cookies, and fruit tartlets. Your music should be light and simple, like some classical music or light jazz. At a party like this, people will be content to enjoy each other¡¯s company and conversation, and sample all of your tempting food choices.
TRIP TO TIMES SQUARE
There isn¡¯t a more festive way to celebrate the New Year than going to watch the ball drop in New York City¡¯s Times Square. Since 1906, droves of people have been gathering to watch that glistening crystal ball ring in the New Year. This trip isn¡¯t for everyone, though. If you don¡¯t like crowds of people, or lots of noise and commotion, then you definitely will not like Times Square on New Year¡¯s Eve. On the other hand, if you and your friends love a great party and the company of other partiers, then you will be right in your element, and you are sure to have an unforgettable night. This is a free event, attended by hundreds of thousands of people every year. Understandably, if you want to be close to the action, you have to get there early, and you have to be prepared to be barricaded into sections. If you leave your section, your chances of getting back into it are slim to none. There are some hotels that overlook the event, but if you want to have any chance of getting into one of those, you are going to have to pay a high price and make an extremely early reservation.
MASQUERADE PARTY
If you and your friends are a dramatic bunch, then you will all have a blast with a costume party. Make it a theme costume party, though. Challenge everyone to come up with a New Year¡¯s costume to don at your gala. Some costume possibilities include a bottle of champagne, Dick Clarke, and the Times Square crystal ball. Or, you could have everyone dress up to represent something involving New Year¡¯s resolutions, such as a cheeseburger or a hammer (dieting and remodeling resolutions). Keep a costume party fun by playing games. You could all write down your resolutions, and everyone could try to guess who each one belongs to. You could enjoy a game of charades, which always leads to hilarity amongst the guests. Play some dance music, and have plenty of noise makers on hand for the ball drop.
TELEVISED COUNTDOWN WITH GOOD PALS
There are a lot of people out there who can think of no better way to spend New Year¡¯s Eve than by just parking in front of the television to watch the ball drop with some close buddies. If you like a mellower environment, without any crowds of strangers to contend with or loud music to shout over, then this is the type of celebration for you. To add a little something special to the night, get a party sub, stock the refrigerator with beer and soda, get some potato and pasta salads and chips, and even get a couple bottles of bubbly to open when the ball drops.
PARTY OF TWO
If you have a special someone in your life, you might want to consider having a special evening together, just the two of you. Celebrate your love continuing on into the years to come. Pull out all the romantic stops. Prepare a candle-lit dinner of your sweetie¡¯s favorite foods. Make a toast, and sip some fine champagne. Slow dance to some love songs. Watch the ball drop together, and enjoy that first kiss of the New Year. |
