Every morning, men go through their wake-up ritual. Shower, brush the teeth, and comb the hair. To top off their daily grooming, a quick shave and then a bracing splash of ¨C what?
Aftershave is often the final touch of preparation a man makes before heading out the door. Lighter fragranced than cologne, aftershave is more appropriate for the close quarters of the office, which makes it perfect for those hectic weekday mornings.
Choosing the right aftershave for you depends on a few key factors. One of the most important is the condition of your skin. Keeping in mind that you have just doused your face with hot water, lathered up, and then raked your face with a sharp object, it should come as no surprise that your skin is more sensitive at that moment than any other time of your day. Alcohol based aftershave will effectively close your pores, but there will be a slight stinging. Some men enjoy the momentary sting, and it has the added bonus of providing a refreshing wakeup call which some men may still require before facing the day. For those that don¡¯t find any value in that bracing feeling, a lotion or balm is the answer. Gentler to the pores than alcohol based products, the lotion or balm will still protect the face and helps to soothe the damage caused by shaving.
Second, the fragrance needs to be right for you and the environment in which you will spend your day. Generally speaking, men¡¯s scented aftershave products should carry a lighter, more subtle scent during the day. This does not mean that you have to smell as if you took a bath in rose petals. There are a number of aftershave products on the market that will provide you with a scent that is slightly woodsy, a little rugged, and will please your senses.
Keep in mind that, first and foremost, you are selecting a scent that is appealing to you. The fragrance should be one that you enjoy and feel confident wearing. It also should not be something that announces your arrival five minutes before you enter the room, or requires windows to be opened when you leave. Choose one that conveys a sense of freshness, and be light enough that only those who are standing close to you will notice.
Remember that the aftershave you choose will most likely become something your partner and children will associate with you for years to come. Most men will remember the type of aftershave their fathers wore, and will think of their dads whenever they encounter that scent. It is up to you whether those thoughts will be pleasant or remind them you picked up on stuff that made their eyes water every time they were around you.
On that note, just because it was good enough for dear old dad does not mean it is going to work for you. Scents often tend to mix with your own body chemistry and to a degree become a part of you. If your natural scent clashes with the aftershave you choose, be prepared for some sideways glances, if not some people offering you a washcloth and pointing to the nearest source of soap and water. Make sure that whatever fragrance you choose, it is one that blends well with your natural scent.
At the same time, the quality of the aftershave you choose must be taken into account. While it is not always true that the cost of a product automatically signals its superior quality, aftershave is often one thing where cost is an indicator. Cheaper products have a tendency to be completely faded out by lunchtime, resulting in the need to splash on a little more before heading back to the office. Don¡¯t waste time money to save a buck when it comes to your aftershave. Less expensive does not mean you will spend less for your fragrance, when you have to use twice as much to get through the day. Invest in something that has enough staying power to get you all the way home before fading away.
Once you have chosen your product, learn how to apply it. While it is more difficult to use too much aftershave than it is to apply too much cologne, many men have proven it is not impossible. This is a situation when less really is more. A good quality product will not require much to close your pores or to leave you with a crisp clean scent. Place a small amount in your palm, generally not more that a quarter teaspoon, rub your hands together a couple of times, then use your palms to apply the product to your beard area, including your neck. This will be enough to keep you smelling fresh all day, and prevent people from running for cover and grabbing the nearest tissue box when you come into the room.
Wearing aftershave is part of what most men do. Make it an activity that provides you with confidence, keeps your skin healthy, and adds positively to the opinion others have about you.
