Buying a nursing bra can be confusing for those who are new mothers.  There are several places to buy nursing bras.  They are sold at retailers such as Target and Wal-Mart, department stores such as JC Penney¡¯s, and specialty stores such as Motherhood Maternity.  Nursing bras are also available at many different retailers on the internet.  While it may not matter where you purchase your bra, the bra you choose is important in making nursing comfortable and convenient.  

Finding the correct size is important, but can be difficult and confusing.  The bra should provide enough support, yet not be too constrictive.  A bra that is too constrictive can cause problems with milk supply and clogged milk ducts. The best time to buy is late in pregnancy, or when your regular bras do not fit anymore.  A general rule for finding the correct size is to go up one cup size and down one bust line size from your current bra. You may want to consider buying more than one size bra and leaving them in their original packaging. This way you can keep the one that fits and return those that don¡¯t.  Be sure to check the store¡¯s return policy.  Some nursing bras have cups that allow for change in breast size.  There are some stores that can help you find the correct size while you are pregnant.  Remember that you will be using nursing pads, so be sure to buy a bra with enough room.  If you have a bra that is just a little too small, extenders are available that will allow the bra to fit comfortably.  

How the bra opens to allow for nursing is an important feature.  There are several different types of openings.  Plastic clip, hook and eye, and Velcro are just some of the options.  Whichever type you choose, it is best to choose one that can be opened and closed with one hand.  Be sure to try this when trying on bras.  Also, choose one that can be opened and closed quietly and discreetly for when you nurse in public.  Some bras are just pulled to the side instead of having a flap that opens to nurse.  While these make nursing easy and convenient, they provide less support than bras with flaps or underwires.  For this reason these bras are good for sleeping.

When looking for enough support, many women feel that an underwire bra is necessary.  However, the wire can put pressure on milk ducts, which can then lead to a blocked duct and possibly mastitis, a breast infection.  Soft cup bras can provide the support needed.  If you still decide to buy a bra with underwire make sure to buy a soft cup bra for sleeping.  Be sure to watch for blocked ducts, and wear a soft cup bra for a few days if you do get a blocked duct. 

If you are going to be using a double breast pump to express milk consider buying a bra that allows for hands-free pumping.  This will make it easier and convenient to pump, and allow you to work or do other activities while pumping.  

These are just a few things to look for when buying a nursing bra.  Be sure to have enough time when shopping for bras so you can try on several different types of bras.  You may want to bring along a friend who has nursed for some help and advice.  And don¡¯t forget to buy one that is fun and sexy!  After nine months of pregnancy, you deserve it
