Homemade drawstring storage bags can help you get your home in order.  They can be made of any scrap fabric you happen to have around, or you can buy fabric in designs to accent your decor.  The best fabric to use for a drawstring storage bag is a heavyweight cotton, such as denim, corduroy, or poplin.  Smaller bags can be made in lighter weight fabrics.  

Unused pieces of polyester double-knit can also be used efficiently in this way.  Drawstring storage bags do not have to be seen, since in many cases they will store things under a cupboard or inside a closet.  One advantage to using a drawstring bag to store things is that it can be hung on the wall by the drawstring.

To make a drawstring storage bag, cut a rectangle twice as large as the finished bag.  Allow 1/2 inch for seams.  Add 2 1/2 inches to the length for the drawstring casing.  For example, if the finished bag is to be 12 inches wide by 18 inches long, cut the fabric 24 plus 1 inch wide by 18 plus 3 inches long, or 25 by 21 inches.

To construct the bag, fold the rectangle right sides together and stitch across the bottom and up the side.  Leave the last 3 inches of the side seam open.  Fold the opening edge to the inside (the bag is currently wrong side out, so the fold is toward you) 1 1/2 inches and then tuck the lower 1/2 inch under.  Sew close to the fold to make the casing.  Start from one open side and sew to the other.  

Drawstrings for storage bags can be made from lengths of scrap bias tape, ribbon, cord, or shoelaces.  Measure the drawstring to be twice the length of the width of the bag plus 10 inches.  In the example above, the string will need to be 34 inches long.  If you wish to make a fabric drawstring, cut a strip of fabric (with the grain) the length needed and 2 inches wide.  Fold 1/2 inch in on each side lengthwise, then fold the whole thing in half lengthwise, so that the right side of the fabric is out and the raw edges are covered.  Press these folds in place and then stitch down the length of the strip through all four layers.  

Thread the drawstring through by attaching a large safety pin to it and pushing the pin through the casing, feeling it as you go.  When the string is through the casing, tie the ends together with an overhand knot.

If you are mass producing these bags in an effort to get your life in order, you don't need to be too fussy about the details.  The bags will work, even if a raw edge shows or a seam is crooked.  In fact, you can, if you're careful, sew the casing with the drawstring already inside.  To do this, sew across the middle of the drawstring on the fold across from the open edge and 1 1/2 inches from the raw edge at the top of the bag.  Fold the casing over the drawstring and stitch in place, being careful not to catch the string in the stitching.  Turn the bag right side out and knot the ends of the drawstring together.

A really quick large drawstring bag can be made from an old pillowcase.  Make a hole in the seam side of the hem and slip your drawstring through.  A bag this size is large enough to store a child's tent or vacuum cleaner attachments.

Drawstring bags can be made in all sizes.  Smaller bags are good for items such as shoe shine equipment or pet medicines.  Middle sized bags are great for feminine supplies in the bathroom.  They can hang on the wall in a handy spot without causing anyone embarrassment.

Toys can be sorted into drawstring bags.  Make one for toy cars, one for doll clothes, one for blocks, etc.  Sizes of the bags don't have to be precise.  For children, you may wish to applique a picture of what goes inside on the outside of the bag.  For instance, sew a simple car shape or dress shape on the bag.

If kitchen drawer space is at a premium, cleaning rags can be stored in a drawstring bag.  Leave the side seam open 8 or 9 inches and you can reach in for a cleaning rag without opening the bag or taking it from it's hook on the wall!

Drawstring storage bags can be hung on nails along the back wall of a closet or on the inner wall of a cabinet.  Those that have been planned to accent a room's decor can be hung in a useful spot where they can be seen.  By hanging stored items, surface space is freed up for larger objects and easier cleaning.
