Everyone hears about them, but no one wants one: the honeymoon from hell. The stories range from missed flights to missing hotel rooms to food poisoning. Are these emergencies avoidable? How? Read on.

The most important key to planning around emergencies is the same as for travel anywhere: planning. Good planning is essential, and it¡¯s hard to do too much of it, where reservations and tickets are concerned, anyway. Planning is even more critical if the honeymoon is not in the U.S., or if air travel is involved.

Traditionally, the groom has planned the honeymoon, but the times they are a-changin¡¯ and this task has changed with it. The better planner should take over the job, or the groom should be given a checklist of things to remember. 

When the reservations are booked, the planner should print out the confirmation page, if booking online, or ask for written confirmation, if the reservations are made over the phone or via mail. If via mail, the reservations should also be made far enough in advance that a confirmation has time to arrive. If booking online, the company will also usually send a confirmation e-mail. Print this out, as well. Give the reservation 48 to 72 hours to make it into the hotel¡¯s computer system, and then give the hotel a call to make sure the reservation is booked with that hotel, and not with another in the same chain, for instance. The same method holds true for airline tickets and rental cars, as well. Call the company to confirm the reservation within 48 to 72 hours. Don¡¯t wait until the departure day to do it. This will eliminate probably 90 percent of the problems a couple might face on a honeymoon. Take the confirmation paperwork on the trip and pack it so it can be easily accessed. Also, leave a copy with a parent or friend at home, along with an itinerary. 

For international travelers, make sure to apply for a passport ¡ª or renew one ¡ª at least six months in advance of the wedding, and be certain that all international paperwork, such as visas, has been confirmed. Remember to pack either a physician¡¯s letter or pharmacy paperwork for all prescription medication, and make sure it is in its original container and easily available for inspection. 

If the couple is catching a plane the next day, they should stay at a hotel close to the airport, preferably at one with shuttle service to the airport. This will eliminate having to call a taxi to get to the airport, with its attendant fees, and a hotel near the airport reduces the chances of being stuck in traffic, trying to get there. 

The couple should also be leery of any ¡°free trips¡± just for signing up. Sometimes, the couple will have to sit through a time-share presentation. Sometimes, these are just scams. Avoid the trap and book with reputable companies. Picking a hotel at the honeymoon destination works the same way. Don¡¯t go for the cheapest one. The couple on a budget should look for a moderately priced hotel that gets at least three stars on most travel sites. This will ensure at least a minimum standard of quality. 

If the honeymoon is a road trip, make sure the car is in good mechanical order, or better yet, rent one. This means the couple will be able to get another car even if the rental breaks down. Again, the reservation should be booked and confirmed well in advance, particularly if the couple wants to rent a high-demand car like a convertible or luxury car.

Money may occasionally be a problem on a honeymoon. One good solution is to keep a credit card with a law balance free of big purchases, so if the couple is stuck without cash, a trip to a bank or an ATM machine will remedy the situation. 

Travel insurance is readily available and the couple should buy it if they are flying to their destination, or are going out of the country. The policy should also include health insurance, particularly for international trips, where the couple¡¯s health insurance might not be accepted. With insurance, if something does happen with the flight, or if someone becomes ill, the couple has recourse to assistance. 

If flying, the couple should be especially careful about following airline procedures for baggage and should arrive at the airport at least 90 minutes before the flight. This should enable them to clear security in time, even if there is a line. E-tickets come in very handy here, since a couple can check in at a kiosk and avoid the lines at the ticket counter. 

In the event a flight is cancelled or delayed, one member of the couple should immediately power up the cell phone and call the airline¡¯s toll-free reservation line, to make other arrangements. The gate agent will probably be swamped, so this is a good option. The agent on the phone will also know every hoop the couple will have to jump through in order to get their flight changed, even to booking it on another airline. 

Being smart and planning well will help most couples avoid emergencies than can be avoided. When the unavoidable happens, they will also have a safety net in place.
