Who are we kidding? Everybody, at one point or another in their life, has resorted to lying for any number of reasons. Sometimes we feel that a lie is necessary in order to keep a friend or family member from getting hurt. For instance, if a friend asks whether or not she has started to look pudgier, it is difficult to say, ¡°Yes, you have gained a considerable amount of weight and need to go on a diet straightaway!¡± While many people might be bold enough to say what they want and answer a question openly and honestly, most people would do their best to beat around the bush and lie if they have to, for fear they would crush their friend¡¯s ego. However, sometimes a lie is not so ¡°innocent¡± as that. There are many for whom lies are a compulsion. Some people have mastered the art of lying and do it every chance they get. If you have ever wanted to spot a liar or learn their traits, here are some ways to determine if you are standing face to face with one.
Many people believe that the more a person fidgets, the more likely it is he is lying. However, many studies have shown that a person who is lying often has to concentrate more on what he is saying, as opposed to somebody who is not lying and simply saying a statement out of their own true memory, and therefore subconsciously limits his movements. Thus, some believe that a person who is lying makes minimal hand movements and gestures, due to the extra concentration and effort he must make to keep track of his ¡°story¡± and its consistency. So, for instance, if your friend normally tells a story using all of her body and suddenly, one day, tells a story sitting completely still, there is a possibility she may be lying or hiding something.
When lying, people often hesitate or make frequent pauses between statements. This is due to the fact that the person must continually make sure that what they are about to say jives with what they have already said. In addition to hesitation, people who lie will often repeat the question you just asked. For instance, if you were approaching a co-worker about stolen office supplies and asked, ¡°So, do you have any idea who might have done it?¡± and they respond with, ¡°What you¡¯re asking is if I have any idea who might have done it?¡± they are more than likely hiding something. Some liars also stutter, due to nervousness and anxiety.
Somebody who is lying or hiding something from you may quickly change the subject. For example, if you approach your boyfriend about a girl you saw him talking to and his next sentence is, ¡°So what are we having for dinner tonight?¡± you can be pretty certain that he is not being open with you about something.
Teenagers often wonder how their parents know they are lying. One such way is that a person who is lying will often give way too much information (and irrelevant information at that) when asked a simple question. A typical scenario might play out like the following. A father approaches his son about a dent in the car. The son says, ¡°What dent?¡± and then proceeds to give a long narrative about how he was nowhere near the car for days and therefore could not have been responsible for the aforementioned dent. Too much information may be a signal that somebody is lying.
Some studies have shown that a person who is lying often makes certain movements like rubbing their eyes, focusing on the right side, playing with their hair, tugging their ear or touching their face. It is true that none of these different mannerisms proves beyond a shadow of a doubt that somebody is lying to you: however if your gut is telling you something is amiss, it is best to listen to it. |
