There are many tributes to Katharine Hepburn, which give evidence her enormous following and fan base.

Having won four Academy Awards in her lifetime and a best selling author in her later years, Katharine proved herself a true star with lasting power. 

Katharine Houghton Hepburn was born May 12, 1907 in Hartford, Connecticut. Born to Thomas and Katharine Hepburn. Her mother was an outspoken supporter of women¡¯s rights. Her father a successful doctor. She often praised her parents for letting her discover her own identity and always supporting her independent nature.

Katharine was a self-proclaimed tomboy as a child whose love of exercise spanned a lifetime. The second of five brothers and sisters, she was especially close to her older brother Tom who died at a young age. After her brothers death she became more withdrawn as a child. 

She attended Bryn Mawr College as a young adult and became involved in acting and theatre as a student there.  Katharine met Ludlow Ogden Smith while still in college, they where married the year she graduated.

They were divorced a few years later. During her life and career, she was reported to have romantic links with several Hollywood stars and famous men. Including a four-year relationship with the millionaire Howard Hughes.

Her professional acting debut was in 1928 in the play ¡°The Czarina¡±. Her Broadway career began shortly after.  In 1932, she appeared in her first movie, ¡°A Bill of Divorcement¡± and received acclaim for her performance in the film. In another film, ¡°Morning Glory¡±, Katharine received her first Academy Award. Not every film was a raving success.  She had a string of bad press and unsuccessful films in the mid-thirties, which gave her the title ¡°box office poison¡±. During this time, she went back to New York and performing on Broadway. One Broadway play, ¡°The Philadelphia Story¡± had a part written especially for her. It was made into a film a couple of years later also staring Hepburn and it was a hit. This success ensured her triumphant return to Hollywood.

Katharine Hepburn made over fifty films in her lifetime, but she never lost her love for theatre and would often return to New York to star in various Broadway plays. Katharine has a lifetime of movie credits to her name spanning six decades.

Katharine Hepburn was often said to be ahead of her time. She wore slacks and was known to be outspoken in a time when women were expected to fit in certain roles. She was quoted as saying, ¡°I never realized until lately that women were supposed to be inferior.¡±  She lived as she felt she should and was not held back by conventional views. 

Katharine¡¯s relationship with Spencer Tracy gave evidence to her unconventional lifestyle. Katharine and Spencer met while they were both starring in the film ¡°Woman of the Year¡± and their relationship lasted for over two decades.  Marriage was not an option for either of them as Spencer was already married and remained so throughout the relationship. She was not a woman known for changing her life or views for anyone, but she spent much of her time with Spencer helping to take care of him in when his health was failing.  Katherine and Spencer made nine films together before his death in 1967.  When speaking of love she was quoted as saying, ¡°Love has nothing to do with what you¡¯re expecting to get -only what you are expecting to give- which is everything.¡±

In her later years, Katharine¡¯s health declined and she was rumored to have Parkinson¡¯s disease, because of the tendency to have Parkinson-like shakes and tremors.  She spent much of the last years of her life at her home in Old Saybrook, Connecticut.  Katharine Hepburn died of natural cause at the age of 96 in her family home. Leaving us with memories of the life and career of one of the most beloved and successful actresses of our time.
