What is a Karat?

It is a common misconception that a karat is a unit of weight. A karat (k. or kt.) is actually a unit of measure for the amount of gold contained in an item. Other metals (such as copper, nickel, silver and zinc) are often added to gold to create a gold alloy. Gold is a soft metal, and the addition of other metals makes it harder and more durable. 

The karat is based on 24 units. For example, 18-karat gold is eighteen parts gold (18/24) and six parts other metals (6/24ths), or seventy-five percent (75%) gold. Pure gold is 24-karat gold. When buying jewelry, remember that more karats equals more gold. In the United States, jewelry must be at least 10-karat gold to be called solid gold. The most popular karatage of gold jewelry in the United States is 14-karat. Jewelry is rarely made of pure 24-karat gold because it is too soft and can easily dent.

Karat vs. Carat

Karat and carat may sound the same, but they have very different meanings for jewelers. A carat (c. or ct.) is a unit of measure specifically for the weight of a gemstone. One carat equals 200 milligrams (mg). A carat is a unit of measure of weight, not size, so one carat of a heavy stone is smaller than one carat of a light stone.  

The Origin of the Karat

The words karat and carat are both derived from the word carob. Carob trees grow in the Mediterranean region and produce seed pods containing carob beans. Ancient Greeks noticed that all carob beans were usually the same size and weight, and started using them as a unit of measure for weighing gems and gold. The beans were also used for balancing scales when weighing items in oriental bazaars. Later Latin alchemists used a basic unit of weight called the carratus, based on the weight of the carob bean. Both karat and carat were derived from this Latin word. Carob beans are commonly used today as a chocolate substitute. 

Karats and Color

Pure 24-karat gold will always be yellow in color. Copper and silver can be added to gold to create an alloy with the same yellow color. However, the addition of other metals can change the color of the gold. For example, gold combined with copper will produce a pink or rose tint. White gold is the result of adding copper, nickel, and zinc to gold. Jewelers are experimenting with other combinations to produce alloys with a variety of tints such as brown and purple. 

How Many Karats Is It?

Gold jewelry is marked with the manufacturer¡¯s trademark and a karat stamp. These two items should be close and easily visible on the item. It is illegal to stamp the karatage and not stamp the manufacturer¡¯s trademark. Look for the stamps near the clasp or on the underside of the piece on jewelry such as necklaces, bracelets, or earrings. The stamps can usually be found inside the band on rings.
