If you are trying to get pregnant (or your significant other is trying), it is very disheartening to discover that there are infertility problems.  However, many couples have had success with infertility treatments, and they have been able to achieve their dream of starting a family.  There are a plethora of options to consider, and I recommend that you start with the most noninvasive methods that are available to you.  After physical examinations of both you and your partner, you can assess the best path for you to follow.  Many couples have to exhaust several treatments before they are successful.  

MEDICATION

One of the most common medication treatments used to fight infertility are ovulation induction medications.  If a woman does not ovulate on a normal basis, these drugs can accelerate the ovulation process.  Also, these medications can increase the number of eggs that are produced during monthly cycles.  Clomiphene citrate is an example of a drug that can help to induce ovulation and egg production.  In general, it is an orally ingested pill that is taken in the middle of a woman¡¯s cycle and continued for about a week afterwards.  Dosage usually starts around fifty milligrams, but if that dosage is ineffective, it is not uncommon for a doctor to elect to raise the dosage at least slightly.  Clomiphene citrate is an affordable option if its benefits suit your needs, and because of its inexpensive cost, it is a good place to start for many infertile women. 

INTRAUTERINE INSEMINATION

Intrauterine insemination entails a catheter being inserted through the cervix so that clean sperm can be injected into the uterus.  This method for the treatment of infertility is one of the most widely spoken about method in the media and in the general public, although most people don¡¯t know the nitty-gritty details about the procedure.  The success rate for this treatment lies somewhere between five and twenty-five percent.   This is a very expensive treatment, and often requires several tries.  However, if you can afford it, and it works, it will of course be worth it in the long run.

LAPAROSCOPY

A laparoscopy procedure calls for the insertion of a thin telescope-like tool into a small cut around the belly button.  The procedure allows for your doctor to see any scar tissue, endometriosis, fibroid tumors, or other deformities or abnormalities on the uterus, fallopian tubes, or ovaries.  This procedure is often used to assess possible fertility options.  

HYSTEROSCOPY

During a hysteroscopy procedure, a thin telescope-like tool is inserted into the vagina and cervix, and the uterine cavity is then distended with fluid for optimal visualization.  Like a laparoscopy, this procedure helps to identify any abnormalities, such as polyps, endometriosis, or scarring, and the procedure can help you and your doctor to assess your next move in achieving pregnancy.

VARICOCELE REPAIR

An enlarged varicose vein on the scrotum is termed a varicocele.  This condition is not entirely uncommon, and it is usually spotted on a man¡¯s left testicle if the condition exists.  Repairing the varicocele can improve a man¡¯s fertility.  Surgical repair can be done, and there is also a non-surgical repair option that can fix a varicocele called percutaneous embolization.  These procedures generally will not require a hospital stay, and they can be performed on an out-patient basis.  The pain that is reported can vary, but pain killers are generally prescribed to alleviate pain in the days following the procedure.
