Whether you ride horses for fun or you ride in competitions, it is important to feel comfortable while looking good. The type of pants you choose to wear can affect your body physically and your freedom of movement. I'm going to give you some inside information on how to choose the best pants for riding horses.
We've all seen those cowgirls wearing skintight jeans appearing to be comfortable and moving with ease. They make it look so easy to get up on the horse and ride wearing those jeans. Of course we all have sat back and said "no way are they comfortable, I'm sure they're ready to bust a gut"! Those cowgirls are very comfortable! They are comfortable because they know what the appropriate pants and jeans are for riding horses.
Most western riders prefer to wear jeans. The trick to choosing jeans for riding is picking the right material. If you choose jeans, you want it to be close fitting but at the same time stretchy. Avoid overly tight jeans, as this can make it difficult to actually get on the horse. However, you don't want your jeans too baggy. Baggy jeans can bunch up and chafe your legs. Look for jeans that have reinforced inner knees and seats. This will protect against wear. Avoid thick inseams, they're not comfortable to ride in and they can rub your skin raw.
English riders choose to ride wearing breeches. Breeches are specifically made for riding horses. They vary from being tight to flared bottoms. Breeches are made with stretchy material, making it easier to get on horses. This also allows for more freedom of moving while riding. The majority of breeches come with knee patches. Those patches help riders keep a safe position on the horse and also protect from bruising.
For personal reasons and sometimes for competitions, the color of pants can be important. Choosing colors may depend on the color of your horse. Wearing dark colored pants with dark horses will allow you to hide dirt that may be visible if you were wearing light colored pants.
Aside from pants, remember to be safe while riding your horse. The basic horse riding gear are ASTM/SEI (American Standard for Testing Materials/Safety Equipment Institute) approved helmets, sturdy shoes and boots that have a heel to keep your foot secure in the stirrup. Helmets are do not keep you secured from head injury but they will reduce the risk. Don't worry about losing a sense of style or becoming too hot wearing a helmet. Your safety is much more important than a fashion statement and studies show that your head will stay much more cooler wearing a white, ventilated helmet than wearing nothing at all.
Never again will you look at those cowgirls wearing skin-tight pants or jeans and wonder how they could possibly be comfortable. Now, you too have the knowledge of what materials to look for when shopping for your horse riding pants. Be safe and have fun shopping. |
