Honeymoon registries are increasing in popularity as a new wedding planning tool, but they still can be a confusing option for both the couple and their wedding guests.

At its most basic terms, a honeymoon registry allows a couple to create a gift list for their honeymoon in much the same way a traditional wedding registry lists items that a couple desires for their home.  A couple would plan their honeymoon vacation down to the last detail, including airline flights, room reservations, meals and special activities.  A honeymoon registry web site would then break the trip into small components, such as ¡°one night hotel stay¡± or ¡°one dinner for two¡±, and assign pricing to these pieces.  A wedding guest could then purchase one of these components as a gift for the couple, and a card would be sent announcing the gift.  

Honeymoon registries have become such a profitable business that almost every travel-related company offers the service.  The largest honeymoon registries are with established web site companies that specialize in the service - some have travel agent services or are affiliated with travel agencies, but others simply act as the registry itself.  Hotel chains, cruise lines, resort companies and specialty travel operators all now offer variations on the honeymoon registry.  

Regardless of the offering company, all registries operate in a similar manner.  When a couple creates a honeymoon registry, they are given cards to include in their wedding invitations or shower announcements highlighting the registry to guests, much like a traditional registry.  When a wedding guest purchases a component of the trip, this money is deposited into an account for the couple.  At a preset time before the wedding date, usually a week prior, a check is issued to the couple for all the money in their account, or the cash value of all the gifts given by guests to that date.  The registry account usually remains open for approximately 30 days after the wedding to accommodate any last minute gifts, and any remaining money is given to the couple.  The couple then receives a printout of specific gifts from each guest as a record.  

The costs for this service vary widely, depending on the outlet a couple chooses.  Some web sites that act as registry only, or in conjunction with a travel agency, will charge flat set up fees to build the registry web site, usually around $100 to $150.  In some cases, discount incentives are offered for using an affiliated travel agency to book the trip.  Some registries skip set up fees in exchange for a commission charge, usually called a ¡°gift delivery fee.¡±  This fee is usually a percentage of the dollars collected, ranging from 5-15%.  Some companies will take this percentage fee from the final check issued to the couple, while others add it to the costs paid by the gift giver.  Occasionally a registry will use a combination of a set up fee and a percentage of sales.  Many alternative registries, such as those affiliated with specific hotel chains and travel companies, will offer the service at no charge in exchange for planning an entire honeymoon through their company.  

Essentially, the honeymoon registry is more of a polite way to request cash gifts for a wedding than it is a true travel planning service.  Due to the various booking deadlines and deposits involved in planning large trips, most couples will have paid for a large portion of their honeymoon well before the check arrives from the registry, so the check is simply a reimbursement.  Guests are not actually purchasing specific items - they are putting down the dollar value for various pieces, but couples can spend the money as they please.  

There are some major caveats to keep in mind when planning a honeymoon through a registry.  While a registry can give an opportunity for a couple to upgrade some portions of their vacations, do not plan a honeymoon far more extravagant than what you can actually afford.  You cannot predict how many guests will actually purchase through your honeymoon registry, so you may not receive enough money in the registry to pay for crucial parts of your trip, like airfare or the hotel stay.  You¡¯ll need to be prepared to cover some or all the essentials of your honeymoon yourself if need be.  Use the registry to add on luxuries like spa treatments, special meals, day trips and activities, etc.  Don¡¯t include things on the registry that are too far-fetched, particularly with adventure travel.  Guests will most likely be drawn to paying for things that are familiar to them, or things they would enjoy themselves and not necessarily something far out of the ordinary.  

Honeymoon registries are not for all couples, or all wedding guests.  They can, however, be a great alternative to asking outright for cash as a wedding gift, or for guests who would feel like they are giving more than just a check.  A registry can be a perfect wish list for an older couple that either has a lot of the traditional registry gifts already, or doesn¡¯t want any of it.  Alternatively, a younger couple who could use the extra financial help to make the honeymoon special could greatly benefit from a honeymoon registry.  Lastly, a couple planning on a very large wedding with a traditional bridal shower (or two) could offer a honeymoon registry as an additional option for wedding gifts as the traditional registry may be purchased in full for the showers.     

If you choose a honeymoon registry, don¡¯t offer it as the only option - also offer some sort of traditional registry.  Some guests will never feel comfortable giving something they cannot feel and touch, and would rather give the more tangible toaster or waffle-maker.  Others will not understand how a honeymoon registry works and will stay away.

Lastly, don¡¯t forget the thank you notes.  Standard protocol applies to honeymoon registry gifts as well, and your guests that use the registry will love to know how you enjoyed that specific component of your trip.
