Homemade wedding favor bags are a special way of telling your guests thank you for sharing this special day with you. You can choose to make a simple no sew bag, or spend more time creating an elegant drawstring bag. Once the bags are completed, you have several options when deciding what to fill them with. The following will guide you through the process of creating your own wedding favor bags, as well as offer some filling ideas.
No Sew Bags
To quickly make no sew wedding favor bags, buy organza or tulle fabric to match your wedding colors. If the fabric is 45 inches wide, you can make 42 bags out of a yard. For fabric that is 60 inches wide, you can plan on making 60 bags from a yard. You will also need to purchase 12 inches of thin ribbon or cording for each bag.
Cut your fabric into 6 inch strips. Then, cut the strips every 6 inches so you will have 6 inch squares. The quickest way to cut the fabric is to use a rotary cutter and ruler for the straight cuts. You can also add a decorative touch by using pinking or wave blades with your rotary cutter. Traditional pinking and wave shears work just as effectively, but will take more time. Also, cut 12 inch lengths of ribbon with angled edges so they will not fray.
Once you finished cutting the fabric and ribbon, take one square and place your choice of filling in the center. Next, bring the four corners up and over the filling, and then tie a knot with the ribbon around the middle of the bag to secure it. If you want to add a charm or small ribbon flower, slip it over the knot. Finish the bag by tying the ribbon in a bow.
Drawstring Bags
Drawstring bags require using a sewing machine and some time for an elegant wedding favor bag. Begin by purchasing your organza or tulle fabric to compliment your wedding colors. You can plan on getting 36 bags out of a yard of 45 inch wide fabric or 54 bags out of a yard of 60 inch wide fabric. You will also need to purchase 18 inches of ribbon per bag.
Begin by cutting your ribbon into 9 inch sections. Then, cut your fabric into 4 inch strips, and then cut those strips into 10 inch sections. Next, fold each 4 inch sides 1/4 of an inch over with the wrong sides together and press with an iron. Then, make a second fold on the same side by turning 1 1/2 inches over and press with an iron. Repeat the folding and pressing steps on the other side of the fabric. The folded edges will be the top of your bag.
Once the edges are folded and pressed, sew the channel for the ribbon. Use a straight stitch and sew 1 3/8 of an inch in from the folded edge. Sew another straight line 1 1/4 inch from the fold. Repeat the steps to sew the ribbon channel on the other side of the bag.
With right sides together, fold the fabric lengthwise so the folded edges are at the top. Then sew the side seams, leaving the folded edges as the opening. Turn the bag inside out and press.
Next, use a seam ripper to make a small opening in the ribbon channel on each side of the seams. Thread through a needle and then feed one 9 inch section of the ribbon through both sides of the bag, and knot the two ends together. On the other side, feed another section of ribbon through and knot the two ends together. You will end up with two pull loops on each side of the bag.
Fill the bag with your choice of filling and then pull the two knotted ends together and tie into a bow. You can also add a charm or flower to the bow.
Filling Ideas
Wedding favor bags are personalized by your choice of fillings. An inexpensive option is to fill the bags with candy. Chocolates wrapped with silver or gold foil adds an elegant touch. Pastel mints fit well with muted wedding colors. You can also order personalized M&M¡¯s in your choice of colors that are printed with a personalized message.
If you are planning a themed wedding, base your wedding favor on it. For example, if you are having a Hawaiian wedding theme, fill your wedding favor bags with dried mangos and papaya. Another option would be flower petals or potpourri for a garden wedding theme.
You can also fill your wedding favor bags with unique items, such as tea bags, small figurines or flower seeds.
