Motion sickness. Call it carsick, airsick, swing sick, seasick, whatever, it's miserable and embarrassing. It makes mature adults feel like green-faced children. Motion sickness is a funny thing. Researchers aren't exactly sure why it happens, although there are many theories, and they're not sure why drugs can minimize it. It is thought to have both biological and psychological roots. Some researchers believe it is an inner-ear issue, some a neurological one, some a psychosomatic one. Whatever the cause, nothing is more miserable than sitting in an enclosed vehicle, feeling as though projectile vomiting is imminent. And that may be the worst part about it: vomiting rarely relieves motion sickness. Only cessation of the motion really works.
So what remedies are effective for motion sickness, and what is available?
Some sufferers swear by the wristband remedy. This is a small velcro band with a plastic lump that sits over a particular nerve in the wrist, and puts gentle pressure on it. This acupressure treatment has been known to work for morning sickness and chemotherapy-induced nausea, but the jury is still out on its usefulness in eliminating motion sickness. They are not expensive though, and certainly there are no drug interactions or the like to worry about. They may be more suitable for someone on several medications. They will certainly not harm anyone.
Another organic remedy is ginger. It can be found in capsule form in the herbal section. It's efficacy in settling an upset stomach is well known, but what about motion sickness? Again, there is no definitive answer. However, like the wristband, drinking a ginger ale or taking a ginger capsule will probably not harm anyone.
Over-the-counter medications are widely avaialable for treating motion sickness. These include the venerable drugs like Dramamine, Bonine and Antivert. Dramamine has saved a trip for me on more than one occasion. These drugs may have some interaction issues, so it's always best to check with the doctor or pharmacist before taking these, especially if you are on other prescription drugs.
These OTC drugs are types of antihistamines, which explains why they will occastionally cause dry mouth and why they frequently cause drowsiness. Dramamine now has a new product out that it purports does not cause drowsiness. I can attest to that fact. I have taken it and flown and then had to drive after I reached my destination, and suffered no drowsiness. In my opinion, it lives up to its advertising. Most OTC drugs must be taken at least 30 minutes before starting the travel, in order to be effective. Another word from someone who has been there: an hour is better. You might get by with 30 minutes, but if you are very prone to motion sickness, take the medicine at least an hour before you leave. It is not known why these drugs help prevent motion sickness, but they have been proven safe through the years for a majority of persons.
Prescription medication is also available for motion sickness. Scopolamine and Scopace are two prescription drugs that are chemically similar. Scopolamine is used in a time-release skin patch and Scopace is a capsule.
The patch releases a small amount of the medication into the patient's system over a period of time, keeping a steady level of medication in the blood. Some sufferers experience dry mouth and other side effects, but it is considered to be one of the most effective medications to combat motion sickness. Scopace is a smaller dose of the same medicine in a capsule. Scientists believe these medications work because they help correct a chemical imbalance that occurs during motion sickness. But as with many things about motion sickness, they're not really sure.
So which medication do you choose? This may be determined by personal preference, what is effective for an individual, and what is safe for that individual to take. Those with questions should seek the advice of their personal physician, especially if they suffer from other medical conditions. The wristband can be recommended without reservations, since it is not chemical in nature. However, OTC medications are usually very effective, as well. A person should consider what his or her needs are when it comes to motion sickness issues, and may need to try a couple of remedies before finding that perfect one that works for them. |
