An aromatherapy massage is a combination of a firm therapeutic touch blended with the beneficial properties of essential oils. This form of massage is a fantastic way to unwind, and alleviate stress.
A good aromatherapy massage starts with a well blended massage oil. If you are thinking about given an aromatherapy massage, or getting one from a friend you must first learn about essential oils. The base of the techniques of aromatherapy massage involves using essential oils or fragrance oils. You can purchase the oils pre-made for massage purposes or create your own massage oils for different healing needs. Purchasing a large selection of essential oils can be a big expense. Look for banquet oils, these are oils mixed together for one purpose such as to relax or to stimulate a person. You can mix several drops of the banquet oil into a 5 ml of carrier oil to create your massage oil.
The base oil used to create massage oils are called carrier oils, these are oils made from vegetable. You can purchase vegetable oils in grocery stores. Use vegetable oils such as grapeseed, almond, apricot, jojoba or olive oil. You can also use coconut oil by melting it down and then adding the essential oils. This will create a massage ointment, the ointment melts when applied to the skin. A rule of thumb is to mix 5 ml (1 teaspoon) of vegetable oil with several drops of essential oil to create a massage oil. Use a medicine dropper to measure 5 ml instead of a teaspoon. The amount of essential oil depends on the strength of the essential oil it self. For example ginger is very strong so it requires just one drop and it should not be used by pregnant women. Always start with the lowest drops of essential oils and increase as you go. You can make a blend of essential oils to create a unique blend. After blending the essential oils, mix the blended essential oils into the carrier oil. Keep your blended massage oils in a dark colored glass bottle with a cap. Cork tops tend to leak, so avoid using them.
You can choose from a large assortment of essential oils, from herbs, spices, earth, flowers and citrus oils. Below is some healing needs combined with the essential oils you can use to alleviate the illness. Remember to ask your doctor if you are currently under a doctors care for any illness before an aromatherapy massage. Especially if you are pregnant or have cancer.

To start you will need a firm flat surface to lay down to receive an aromatherapy massage. The person given the massage will kneel down beside the receiver.
Do not perform a massage on a bed or sofa. The softness of the cushions or mattress will take away from the pressure being applied during the therapeutic massage. You could use a pillow for the head. Roll a towel and fold it into a U shape to support the head. You may also place a folded towel under the feet. Have extra towels to wipe off excess oil. You will need a sheet to lay on and one to cover parts of the body that are exposed.
Start the massage by gently placing your hands first on the head of the receiver. This will help get the person comfortable with your touch. Hold their head cupped in your hands for a minute. After move down to their feet and repeat what you did with their head with their feet. This technique aligns the body and you as one. Place a few drops of massage oil into your hands. Position your hands palm down on the lower back. Gently begin to run your hands up the back, staying away from the spinal column. Run your hands up the back to the base of the neck and back down. Now cover the top part of the back as you work on the lower back. Add a little more pressure as you rub and gently pull the skin along the lower back. Concentrate on the areas that have the most tightness (remember not to press down on the center of the back). Apply more massage oil to your hands if they feel dry. Use the bottom portion of your hands to apply gentle pressure. Tell the receiver to let you know if they become uncomfortable or feel pain. After working the lower back cover the lower back and move up the back. Repeat massaging with gentle yet firm hand strokes. Cover the areas of the body you are not massaging to keep the receiver warm. When you reach the top back concentrate on the shoulders. Work around the shoulder blades, do not apply any pressure to the shoulder blades them selves. Massage up the nap of the neck and around to the temples with very gentle circler finger massage. You can repeat this technique on the front portion of the body working in circler hand motions on the stomach. When you have finished given the aromatherapy massage allow the receiver to remain laying down for several minutes.
