Accidents happen everyday to folks in all walks of life. Accidents often cause injuries. Because of this unfortunate reality, you and your family need to be prepared at all times. One of the best ways you can be prepared for accidents is to keep a first aid kit in your home and in each of your autos. That way, you'll have some basic first aid tools and materials to handle injuries.

But, for a first aid kit to be useful, it has to contain the right tools and materials. Examples of what you need include bandages, adhesive tape, tweezers, cotton balls, antibiotic cream, and alcohol swabs. Alcohol swabs are useful for cleaning minor cuts, bites, and other skin wounds. 

Cleaning cuts and other wounds will kill harmful bacteria that can cause infection. These swabs are also used to prepare the skin for injections, such as for bee sting allergy pens. Before an injection is given, an area on the skin must be sterilized. 

Alcohol swabs contain a solution of seventy percent isopropyl alcohol and water. Isopropyl alcohol is commonly known as rubbing alcohol. (It's also known by another name, isopropanol.) This is because it can also be used to treat bruises and relieve sore, tired muscles.    

Isopropyl alcohol is also a colorless liquid, and it has a strong, distinct odor. It's highly flammable, so it must be kept away from sparks and flames. Once it is dry, it's not flammable any longer. Fortunately, this type of alcohol evaporates quickly once it is exposed to air. This is why you must store your first aid kit in a cool place out of direct sunlight. Otherwise, the alcohol swabs can dry up from exposure to heat.  

In order to choose the right alcohol swabs for your first aid kit, you should look for strength of seventy percent. Name brand swabs are, of course, more expensive, but that doesn't make them necessarily better than the generic brands. The generic alcohol swabs usually cost around two cents apiece, while the name brand ones can run five cents or more each. So you can see the significant savings you can achieve by looking for a generic brand. 

This first aid kit antiseptic can readily be found at your local drug store. They are sealed in individual foil packets in order to keep them clean and sterile. You can use them one at a time without compromising the freshness of the rest of the supply. If, by chance, one of the foil packets gets a hole in it, dispose of it immediately as it is no longer sterile and fresh.             

To use an alcohol swab, open the foil packet, dab it onto the skin area, then dispose of it properly. Follow the manufacturer's directions and do not place it in your eyes or nose. It is for external use only!    

Finally, to make sure that your alcohol swabs stay fresh and ready to use in an emergency, be sure to check the expiration date on the side of the box periodically. Expired swabs should be properly disposed of, and replaced with a fresh supply.
