In order to be properly braided, the hair must be combed free of any knots or entanglements. The best tool for braiding is a rat-tail comb. This is a fine-tooth comb that has a long, tapered handle which is used for parting the hair. Always have your elastic hair bands on hand (or on your wrist) before you begin, ready for use. Avoid using rubber bands, which tangle and break the hair easily. 

Your grip is very important in producing a good braid. If it is too loose, you may loose some strands, or make uneven sections. Too tight, and you might hurt the person whose hair you are braiding. As you practice, you will learn better to control the tension and produce better and better braids. 

THE STANDARD BRAID

Also known as the English braid, is the easiest to begin with. You can start with the hair loose, or first put the hair in a ponytail before beginning. Use the rat tail comb to divide the hair into three equal sections. In your right hand, firmly pinch the center section between the middle and pointer finger, and the far right section between the pointer and thumb. In the left hand, grasp the left section with your pointer and thumb.

Take the farthest right section and cross it over the center section, bringing it into the middle. Grasp it with the left hand, crossing the left section over it and bringing it into the middle. Continue alternating bringing each side into the middle as you work your way down the hair, tugging to keep the tension. Try to make sure the hair remains smooth as you work your way down, and that each section of the braid is even.

When you come close to the end of the hair, tie off the end of the braid with an elastic band. 

PIG TAIL

Simply style the hair into a pony tail, then divide and braid as described in the standard braid above. 

THE FRENCH BRAID

This braid is a bit more complicated and improves as you acquire a proper grip, but makes a beautiful, classic style. When done right, each section gracefully sinks into the next, sort of like a zipper. 

To begin, use your rat tail comb to make two parts in the hair that line up with the arch of the eyebrow. Then, part across so that you have the top crown sectioned off. Divide that section into three parts and grip as with the standard braid. 

Cross the first and second sections alternately into the middle. Before crossing the next section, use the rat tail comb to draw more hair from the side of the head into the braid. Cross over. Draw more hair from the other side into the next section and cross over. Repeat the motion, alternating, taking a little bit more hair each time as you work your way down.

You will notice that where the base of the scalp meets the nape of the neck, there is an inverted bell-shaped curve. It is very important that the head be held down and you keep the tension so that the braid is made as close to the scalp as possible. If the head is held up straight and you pull the hair outward on an angle, when you tie off the braid and let it drop, you will find that the bottom plaits sag and droop unattractively. 

When the braid comes to the bottom of the hairline, draw the remaining loose hair into the braid sections, and continue down as you would a standard braid. Tie off the end with an elastic band. 

THE INVERTED FRENCH BRAID

This is done in the same manner as the French braid, only instead of crossing each section over into the middle, you cross it underneath the other sections. The result will be, instead of a ”°zipper”± look, a much more pronounced plait that lays flush against the scalp.

THE FISHBONE BRAID

The name for this braid came from its appearance, which is something resembling a fish vertebrae. It is made in the same way the French braid is made, except using only two sections of hair instead of three. Simply divide the crown section in two and begin pulling one over the other, adding sections of loose hair into your grip as you work your way down.
