Fear not, choosing wedding attire for the groom or groomsmen is easier than you think. The first thing to think about is the formality of the wedding. If your wedding will be very casual, you might want to think about wearing a business suit, or just some nice slacks and a button-up shirt. But if your wedding is going to be formal enough to warrant wearing a tuxedo, you have quite a few options in terms of accessories and even the cut of the jacket.
Of course, you have the option of a 1-4-button single-breasted jacket (single-breasted means the buttons go in single-file down the front of the jacket) or a 2-6-button double-breasted jacket (the buttons go two-by-two down the front). These are the most common cuts when it comes to jackets. Or you have the option of going a bit more formal.
A tailcoat, also known as full dress, is short in the front and then tapers to two tails in back. Think Fred Astaire, with the top hat. The Mandarin, or Mao, has a stand-up collar with no lapel. It is paired, of course, with the Mandarin-collared shirt, which we¡¯ll get to in a bit. A cutaway jacket is cropped in the front and tapers to a long, wide back tail. This style is usually worn in either black or grey, with matching striped trousers. Finally, the stroller coat is a semi-formal suit jacket that looks like a tux and is intended to be worn for afternoon weddings.
There are three types of lapels to choose from on a jacket. The most common is the notched lapel, which is the least formal, and features a triangular indentation where the lapel and collar meet. The shawl collar is smooth all the way around, with no notches. And the peaked lapel is a broad v-shaped lapel.
Trousers are pretty easy ¨C just look for a pair that matches your jacket in color and style. Striped black or grey trousers are a good idea if you¡¯ll be sporting them at an ultra-formal wedding.
There are a few different styles of shirts you can pick, as well. The wing collar is popular for use under a tux jacket, with a stand-up collar that sports downward points. The Crosswyck crosses in front of your throat and is fastened with one button. The Mandarin, worn with the Mandarin jacket, stands up at the collar and eliminates the necessity of a tie. And the spread collar looks like a normal button-front shirt, but with points spread wide in the front, which is worn with a wide tie.
While you¡¯re choosing a shirt, make sure you also decide how you¡¯d like your cuffs to look. You can wear them closed with buttons, with cufflinks, or folded together with cufflinks, which is called the French Cuff.
Next, decide what kind of tie you¡¯d like. A white bowtie is for super formal events. They come in many different colors, though, and you can choose one that matches the bridesmaids¡¯ dresses or goes with the color scheme of the wedding. A necktie is less formal, and there are several different ways to tie it. Of course, you always have the option of a bolo tie, especially if your wedding is western-themed. But you might want to try an ascot if your wedding is ultra-formal, which is a wide tie made of patterned fabric that¡¯s folded and held together by a tie tack.
Now it¡¯s time to complete the outfit with accessories. There are a few choices. Vests, or waistcoats, can be color-coordinated, or white for an extra formal wedding. A cummerbund is a pleated, thick belt worn around the waist. The folds traditionally point upwards, as they used to be made with a small pocket for a wedding ring or opera glasses.
You might want to consider visually setting the groom apart by having him wear a different-colored or ¨Ccut jacket, a bigger or different colored boutonniere, or different-colored accessories. Often the groom wears a tux that¡¯s a bit more formal than his groomsmen. Or he could wear white accessories to match the bride while the groomsmen wear accessories to match the bridesmaids.
Once you¡¯ve decided what your wedding¡¯s color scheme will be as well as the formality of the event, find a local tux shop and go in for a fitting. The people there will be able to help you with all of these choices. With a little knowledge about tuxedo and accessory styles, you¡¯ll look great on your big day.
