How to Give Yourself a Home Pedicure
Giving yourself your very own home pedicure can be a relaxing and fun experience. It¡¯s important to take time to pamper yourself! A home pedicure is definitely less expensive than a salon pedicure and can be safer, depending on your salon¡¯s tool and tub cleaning processes.
Tools
Tub or bucket
Hot water
Bath salts or bubble bath
Washcloth
Nail scrubber
Loofah or pumice stone
Towel
Old newspaper or magazine
Toe-separator or tissue
Toenail clipper
Medium to rough nail file
Clear base coat¡ªnail polish
Colored nail polish
Top coat¡ªnail polish (may be same as base coat, optional)
Assemble all the tools from above that you will be using during your pedicure. Place them in easy reaching distance so that you won¡¯t have to walk on your heels to find anything!
A. Cleaning and filing
1. Fill a tub or bucket with medium to hot water, and mix it with bath salts or bubble bath.
2. Be sure to keep the towel, washcloth, nail scrubber and loofah or pumice stone nearby so you don¡¯t track water around.
3. Soak your feet for a good 10-20 minutes, and don¡¯t forget to relax! If you have a bucket, you can sit in a comfortable chair and read a book, or just lean back and close your eyes. This is a good time to put on a gel-eye mask as well. Treat yourself!
4. Once you are done relaxing, wash your feet well with the washcloth, scrub your nails to get out any dirt with the nail scrubber, and use the loofah or pumice stone to work on the heels and balls of your feet. Only move in one direction with the loofah or pumice stone, and don¡¯t do too much at one time, or your feet will be sore!
5. Dry your feet with the towel. Set aside the bucket, or drain the tub.
6. If necessary, clip toenails straight across, so as not to create ingrown toenails. You can create a nicer shape when filing.
7. Using the medium to rough nail file, file across nails in the same direction, creating a smooth edge.
8. Then, using the medium grit nail file, lightly file the tops of your toenails, especially your big toes. This will create a better surface for the nail polish to adhere to, and you will experience fewer chips in your nail polish. It will also make your nails shinier, as there will not be as many facets or grooves in your nail.
B. Painting your toenails
1. Using a base coat is very important¡ªany clear nail polish will do. A base coat keeps the nail polish from staining your toenails and provides a surface to which you can easily apply the color.
2. Before applying the base coat, insert the toe-separator between your toes, or wind a tissue between your toes so that polish does not get smeared on your skin. There is a trick for removing nail polish from skin mentioned later.
Base coat
3. Don¡¯t shake the bottle of nail polish! This will create air bubbles that can be transferred from the brush to your nail. Roll the bottle if necessary.
4. Place an old newspaper or magazine under your toes. Sometimes it¡¯s easiest to sit on the floor. Sometimes you may prefer a chair and propping your feet up on a footstool.
5. Pull the brush from the nail polish bottle, and wipe off one side. Use the side with the clear polish on it to stroke down one of your big toenails, first down the middle and then down each of the sides. Use less polish for your other toenails, and repeat on the other foot. If the clear polish isn¡¯t perfect, that¡¯s okay because it doesn¡¯t show! Try to cover your entire nail, but don¡¯t use a thick coat. Remember the base coat just protects and readies your nail for the colored polish.
**Stop here and allow the clear nail polish to dry if you want a very natural, healthy nail look. Continue for colored toes!
Nail Color
6. Wait 5 minutes after applying the base coat to apply the nail color.
7. Roll the nail polish bottle if the polish has separated at all.
8. Using the same technique as with the base coat, bring the brush out of the bottle, and wipe off one side of the brush. Using the side with a bead of color, make a stroke down the middle of your big toenail and then the sides. Re-dip the brush, and use less polish for your other toes. Repeat on the other foot.
9. Tip: If you accidentally get colored nail polish on your skin, put a dot of clear nail polish over it, and use your fingernail to scrape off both the clear and the colored nail polish.
10. Wait 5-10 minutes, and apply a second coat if desired.
Top coat
11. A top coat on toenails is not necessary, but it can make your toenails shinier. Be sure to allow your colored polish to dry thoroughly before applying the top coat, or the colored nail polish might be pushed around by the brush.
12. Try to wear open-toed sandals for at least 30 minutes after your pedicure so that they have ample time to dry. Admire your beautiful toes!
