Everyone loves to get a housewarming gift when they move into a new home and most people give things like plants or flowers. Anyone can go out and buy a bouquet of flowers or a potted plant, so here are some ideas to help you choose a unique gift that the recipient will remember for a long time.
Different gifts work well in different situations. You have to consider what type of move your friend or family member is making. Are they moving a long distance, from a rental to a house they purchased, from their parent¡¯s home to their first apartment, to a home that needs a lot of TLC, or maybe just a few doors down?
Someone who is moving away from home for college may appreciate a basket filled with a roll of quarters for their laundry, a gift certificate for a nearby grocery store and perhaps a prepaid phone card so they won¡¯t get too homesick. Prepaid gas cards also make a great gift for students who travel home on the weekends or for holidays.
For those long distance moves a gift that contains ¡®We¡¯ve Moved¡¯ cards with a roll of stamps is appropriate. This gift may also contain return address stickers with their new address printed on them. Of course, every gift is improved by good wrapping, so put these items in a little metal mail box, or pretty basket that can be reused. If the mover is buying a fixer-upper or is perhaps just a single women, a handyman kit is a perfect gift. This gift basket can contain a small personal tool kit and a gift certificate to a home improvement store.
Families moving with children will probably be in need of a night of rest and enjoyment, so why not give them something the whole family can use? Try a big bowl filled with microwave popcorn, candy, and a DVD or video cassette. A gift certificate for pizza and a movie theater is another alternative, and it never hurts to throw in homemade coupons for free babysitting for parents who may need time alone.
A Bonsai tree growing kit is a wonderful gift for someone moving into a condo or apartment that does not have any yard or garden space. This gift would also go well with chopsticks and either a gift certificate to a nearby Chinese restaurant, or the makings for a Chinese meal. If the mover has a big yard that has yet to be fully landscaped, a native tree from the nursery is a good way to welcome them to the neighborhood. It also provides a gift that will grow with them in their new home.
A few housewarming gifts that work well for just about anybody are magazine or newspaper subscriptions, books on local history with a city map, and personalized address markers and name plaques. If you still feel that the traditional flower arrangement is a good housewarming gift, mix it up a little by purchasing a candy cookie bouquet instead. These can be made from candy or chocolate flowers, colorful frosted cookies, or with a variety of different candies wrapped and decorated in a bouquet or basket that looks good enough to eat. No matter what gift you choose to welcome someone to a new home, remember that a thoughtful creative gift will be remembered long after all their housewarming houseplants have expired. |
