If you are planning a fortieth ※tombstone§ birthday party for yourself or a loved one, there are several great ways to make the event a major success!  You can create tombstone-inspired invitations, decorations, foods, and music that will make your party a blast.

INVITATIONS

To make tombstone invitations, you will need white construction paper, pencils, small uppercase letter stencils, and black markers.  

Directions:

1. Cut your construction paper into 5§x7§ rectangles.  You need one rectangle per invitation.

2. Use your scissors to round off the one of the shorter sides of each rectangle, so that the rectangles are shaped like tombstones.

3. Sharpen your pencil, and hold the tip on its side against the paper (do not use the point).  Color in your rectangles with pencil.  

4. Use a paper towel to smudge the pencil coloring in.

5. On the top of the invitations, use your stencil and black marker to write ※Tombstone Party.§  

6. Underneath the stenciled writing, use your black marker to handwrite the rest of your invitation.  Your invitations should include information including the name of the guest of honor, the date and time of the party, the address of the party, your name and phone number, and an RSVP date.   

DECORATIONS

Tombstone parties are all about humor 每 they are not intended to be serious, formal affairs.  Therefore, your decorations should be fun and playful, because that is how you want your guests to feel.  You can work with the ※over the hill§ joke to create some decorations.  Cut pieces of construction paper into hill shapes and hang them in sets of three throughout the house.  On the first hill, write ※Over,§ on the second hill, write ※The,§ and on the third hill write ※Hill.§  You could also have some of the sets of hills say ※Happy§ on the first hill, ※Fortieth§ on the second hill, and ※Birthday§ on the third hill.  You can also find pictures of hills on the internet, print them out, and hang them on the walls as well.  Try to locate photographs of the guest of honor from their childhood through adult years.  If you are worried about damaging the originals, you can make color copies of the pictures or you can use a scanner to print them out on your computer.  Hang the pictures in chronological order on a wall so that the guests can see a timeline of the birthday person＊s forty years of life.  You can also make tombstone streamers by cutting pieces of gray construction paper into the shapes of tombstones and threading them onto a piece of string.  You can spell out ※Happy Birthday§ or ※Happy Tombstone Birthday§ on the tombstones.  

FOODS

The foods that you serve at a tombstone party do not need to be gourmet dishes 每 you just want to have some fun, classic party foods.  For appetizers, you could offer such things as chips and dip, raw vegetables, pasta salads, mozzarella sticks, chicken nuggets, and Swedish meatballs.  For dinner, a party sub is always a hit.  Italian combos are usually a real crowd pleaser.  You should also have some tossed salads and fresh breads.  Set up the dinner in a buffet style 每 that way you won＊t have to worry about serving everyone at a dining room table.  For dessert, make a sheet cake, and round off one of the shorter sides so that the cake is shaped like a tombstone.  Use food coloring to make your frosting grayish, and use candy letters to write ※Happy Tombstone Fortieth Birthday, [name]§ on the top of the cake.    

MUSIC

As a gag, play some music that was popular in the year that the guest of honor was born 每 to really showcase their age!  If you have the patience, you could make a mix of tunes that have been popular over the years, and play them in chronological order, ending the night with a hit from present day.  It is a lot of fun to see how much music has changed in the past forty years 每 your guests and the guest of honor are sure to get a real kick out of it.
