If you are human, there are going to be times in your life when stress can seem overwhelming. Stress can be brought on by a variety of causes including working too hard, money woes, children, relationship problems, hot or cold weather or just because something didn't turn out the way you had planned.
It is not just the modern day world that has had to learn to deal with stress. Herbal remedies for stress and anxiety have been around for centuries. Many people, both today and in the past, have turned to alcohol to relieve stress only to find that the drink is the worst possible choice. While alcohol can relieve tension and anxiety, the lasting effects are not worth the momentary relief.
Failure to deal with stress and its causes can lead to more harmful medical problems such as ulcers, high blood pressure, heart attack and strokes. Many herbs are available to help you cope with stress and stressful conditions.
Valerian promotes relaxation and supports a restful nights sleep. The downside to valerian is the smell. Similar to the scent of an old sock, if you can get past the smell, valerian may be all you need to chill out.
Hops are one of the ingredients in most beers. Skip the beer and put fresh or dried hops under your pillow for a restful night. You will wake more refreshed and better able to cope with the next day.
St. Johns Wort is known throughout Europe as an anti-depressant. Used for centuries to ward of anxiety and panic attacks, recent German studies have proven that St. Johns Wort can help relieve stress in many individuals. St. Johns Wort should not be taken with other prescription medicines without discussing it first with your doctor.
Kava-Kava is the root of a Polynesian plant that is said to help you relax with out feeling drugged, lower your inhibitions so that you can feel more sociable, and relieve muscle tension.
Chamomile acts much like a tranquilizer and helps with mild nervousness and mild sleep disorders.
Bach Rescue Remedy is a homeopathic remedy that can be found in most health food stores. A combination of five flower essences, it is said to relieve stress, balance the emotions and reduce fear in frightening or emergency situations.
Passion flower works like a sedative to throw off panic attacks, anxiety and allow relaxation.
Other natural ways to reduce stress and anxiety can be as simple as changing the way you do things. Avoid caffeine and alcohol, and watch your diet. Add a multi-vitamin to your daily routine and add extra B vitamins if you know your day is going to be stressful.
Learn to meditate, or at least learn to take a few minutes for yourself daily. Exercise regularly. This doesn't have to be strenuous; a simple fifteen minute walk daily will help you relax. Learn to laugh, even when it is at yourself. The old saying, laughter is the best medicine, is true.
If you find yourself becoming stressed to the point that you can no longer function normally, doing your everyday things, see your doctor. Stress can be overwhelming and your doctor is there to help you make it through. Also, check with your doctor before beginning any herbal program or exercise routine. Herbal alternatives can offer relief, but still has side effects and risks. |
